Exchange disaster recovery problem

OK, I hope someone here can help, I've been tearing my hair out for a week.

I have built an Exchange 2003 server on Windows 2003 server member server (not a DC).
Everything works fine, I am now setting up a disaster recovery plan.  My plan is to use ntbackup to backup the "microsoft information store, first storage group,"  to a network location on my file server.  To test this, I performed a test backup.
To restore the test backup, I did the following:
1) made sure the "database can be overwritten by a restore" checkbox on the mailbox store and public folder store were checked.
2) dismounted both the mailbox store and public folder store.
3) rechecked step one
4) opened ntbackup in advanced mode, navigated to the backup, cataloged it and clicked backup.
5) left the "restore to" pointing to the server (we only have one), and picked a temp folder on the server for the "temporary location for log and patch files"
6) started the backup - which obviously didn't work.

the report had the following:
Restore Status
Operation: Restore

Backup of "MNHC-MAIL\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group", Restored to"MNHC-MAIL\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group"
Backup set #1 on media #1
Backup description: "Set created 11/23/2005 at 3:31 PM"

Restore started on 11/23/2005 at 4:06 PM.

Does anyone have any idea what the heck is going wrong?  Even some idea of what the errors are would be of help.
