I was wondering if someone can give me a really good explanation on how the Technology works for DSL and Cable. I am looking for a technical response, so if you can give me a quick run-down (for both DSL and Cable):<br />

1) How the Technology actaully works in the line. &nbsp;Why can some areas get it and not other areas?<br />
2) Speeds...how much faster than dial-up<br />
3) What is bandwidth? &nbsp;What affects it?<br />
4) If you use a gateway/router, will speed decrease with either technology<br />
<br />
And any other fascinating tidbits.<br />

DSL vs Cable Technology

The term broadband commonly refers to high-speed Internet access that is always on and faster than the traditional dial-up access. Broadband includes several high-speed transmission technologies such as digital subscriber line (DSL), cable, fiber optics, wireless (for which there is a separate topic), satellite and broadband over powerlines (BPL).
