Recovery disk for a Thinkpad R30
Hello all!

I have recently bought a used Thinkpad R30 for my niece, as I was looking for something of quality for not much $$.

However something has gone corrupt with it and I need to reload the operating system.  It has an XP Pro sticker on it, so I  thought, I could reload XP Pro fro a disk I have.  No dice... it did'nt recognize the serial number as it wasn't an "IBM" version of XP.  (The sticker has IBM on it in small letters).  So I'm between a rock and a hard place...how can I get ahold of the recovery disk(s)?  It was bought through a company that deal in getting computers from companies after they come off of lease, and they have been no help at all.

I would greatly appreciated any help.

You would have to buy a copy of XP. Or, as you have found, there are multiple versions of XP and multiple license options for XP. If you feel like doing some trial and error work, borrow copies from friends and see if one will work with your key. So long as you use the CD key on your laptop you are within the requirements of the licensing agreement. Likely you need an OEM version and then it will have to be the same version XPhome/XPpro/w SP1/ w SP2 /no service pack.

A laptop or notebook is a portable personal computer with a clamshell form factor, suitable for mobile use. Although originally there was a distinction between laptops and notebooks, the former being bigger and heavier than the latter, there is often no longer any difference. Laptops are commonly used in a variety of settings, such as at work, in education, and for personal multimedia. A laptop combines the components, inputs, outputs and capabilities of a desktop computer, including the display screen, speakers, a keyboard, and pointing devices (such as a touchpad or trackpad) into a single unit. The device can be powered either from a rechargeable battery or by mains electricity from an AC adapter.
