Disk I/O error: status = 00001000

I recently installed a new Maxtor hard drive a couple of months ago (which has occasionally made some whirring noises, I confess).  However it has operated perfectly well.  I am using Win 2K and have had problems with this computer in the past but I have brought it back to life each time.  It is a 1.2 GH that I've overclocked to 1.4GH.

I set the machine to print out something, and when I returned to it I discovered it had rebooted and was hanging with a message saying "Failed to ArcRead the boot partition."  Insert a bootable CDROM.

When I restarted with the original Win 2K disk it loads all the drivers and then hangs with the folowing message:
"Disk I/O error: Status = 00001000"

From browsing this site and others it seems this is a hard drive or hardware problem.  If so, should I go back to Maxtor and see if they can help?

Is it possible I downloaded a virus that has so courrupted the boot sector that the hard drive is unreadable and been made invisible?

At start up, the machine recognizes the drive is present, but then it seems to disappear.  I have stuff backed up of course, but in order to reinstall or reformat, or whatever, I have to be able to access the drive and get it recognized.

Anyone have any suggestions or information?
Thanks,
Peter

I had alrerady seen these, thanks.  I guess what I need are two things:
How do I get the hard drive to be recognized again so I had, if necessary reformat it?
If it's a hardware problem involving, I would presume, the motherboard, is the machine salvagable?
Lastly, would it ake more sense at this stager to go ahead and buy a new machine I've been planning to buy and see if the old hard drive works in that?  At least in terms of getting data off it?

Try putting it back to 1.2 GHz.  Do you have another machine you can try the hard drive in?
Not at the moment.  I guess that's what prompted my thoughts about getting a new machien I was thinking of buying anyway.
Would it make sense to disconnect the drive and then reconnect it?

Peter,

You must make sure the overclocking isn't causing the problem.

Not knowing how you overclocked the system, I'm guessing the RAM isn't taking it that well, i.e., you must slow it down.

Could be the processor is overheating...

Is the CPU cooling fan functional? make sure.

Some PCs come with a BIOS that can display the temperature of the system.
Go to the CMOS setup and see whether your PC has this feature.
If so what is the temperature of the CPU? Ambient environment?
it wontr be the overheating thg,...
well since it kenot detect the hdisk.. i will su ggest u to plug out the data cable and plug it back.... i wondering whether it is due to the cable problem.. :d
Boot your computer from a Boot Disk.

This is a debug script that will reset your hard drive. If your hard drive is good this should work.

NOTE: If you use this, you will loose all the information on your Hard Drive.

Thank you all for your help.  I managed to finally run MaxBlast, and when I tried to reformat the drive and reinstall it confirmed that the drive had physically failed.  It was only some 60 days old so I hadn't initially given enough consideration to that happening.  (Ah, the power of brand name advertising -- how could MAXTOR stuff fail, right?)
Anyway, it's within warranty and they are shipping me a replacement.
Regards,
Peter

Sorry that's not appropriate.

Turnbjr did suggest the use of the HD utilities.
