while initializing device VKD-windows protection error- restart- computer shuts down

HELP
Hello,
I have computer with windows 98. Besides having a floppy drive( not used ) and cd rom drive (not used) it has a tape drive used for back up in it--not sure if this is relevant to problem.

The computer boots right into the screen where you can choose to start in (1) normal ( 3) safe mode- etc.. and at the bottom tells me to boot to safe mode. but when do or also when try normal come to screen that says:
While initializing device VDK
Windows protection error
You need to restart computer - then shuts down - you try to boot up and same thing happens over again.

I unattached printer and cable to router so computer is a stand - alone. It normally connects to small router/switch and has main information for a another computer hooked to the router.

This computer when it boots off of tape drive makes noise - like hard starting - even when it was working good - not sure if this info is relevant either.
Any ideas?
Help
Thank you

I have  turned of the computer andunhooked the keyboard and reconnected it - this did not work- so I replaced the keyboard with a good one I use- this did not work.

Now i get message like first only now it reads at the end:

Windows protection error Y _  and freezes.
I have went to setup to see if anything thing looks wrong- I try safe mode and normal - still no luck.

I know by the microsoft support it has to be something w/ keyboard- but I the basic steps are not working
any more ideas?

Thanks

Can you get in the bios? and is the keyboard working then? if yes, try a repair install :

You may like to check for problems with your printer in the Device Manager:

Oops .. for <printer> of course, read <keyboard>

I was able to go into command prompt.
type in scandisk/ all
and fixed bad cluster and its working again.

thanks
davetough:    Well, you seem to have cured much of the problem yourself.      .. but thank you.
I agree with Jonvee on that one, it was very much a self-resolved one that.  Thank you.

It is very easy to forget sometimes that many of Windows problems can be caused by bad areas on the hard drive affecting one or two essential system files.  I once spent ages recreating my Fonts folder, when in fact it turned out to be a problem that was easily cured with scandisk and then the reinstallation of the fonts used for certain windows shell dialogs which were obviously on the affected area of the hard drive.
