Missing Font Error Upon Starting Pinnacle Studio 8
System: VIA Technologies Inc KT400-8235
Motherboard: Biostar M7VIT Pro
Graphics: ATI All In Wonder 9800 Pro
Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2500+ 1.8 Ghz
RAM: 512 MB DDR-SDRAM PC2700
OS: Windows XP Home SP2

A version of Pinnacle Studio 8 came bundled with my ATI video card.  I had major problems getting the software for the card to work ....... solved thanks to Expert advice obtained here!  Studio 8 installed easily but when I run the program I get an error message headed TitleDeko -  "Expected typeface MS Sans Serif could not be found. Program will not perform properly. You may use Control Panel fonts to install this font". I click OK and the program appears to open normally and will function properly as far as I can tell but I have difficulty reading any taxt in the information pop up windows and in some of the function windows.  I have that font installed according to Control Panel > Fonts but I don't see any way of installing it to Studio as the error message suggests.

I have had the program in and out of the machine several times but cannot get rid of the error message.  Over the course of a two week dialogue with Pinnacle's tech support they were unable to come up with a solution for me.  If I may ask a second question .........  I would like to know why I can capture in AVI format with hardly a lost frame but capturing in MPEG format gives a dropped frame rate of about 480 per minute. I am working with 8mm camcorder tape through ATI Rage Theatre capture.

Got it in one, lherrou,  ..... Many Thanks!   ( I should have come to EE first!)

Studio now opens (finally!) without the error message and I can clearly see all the text in the various windows.

It was 'problem 1'.  I had micross.ttf in the Fonts folder.  I followed the instructions in your link exactly and then rebooted. I now have sserifeo.fon in the Fonts folder (a slightly different file name than expected) and I notice that micross.ttf popped back in the folder after the restart.

I just wonder why I didn't already have this font as it seems to be very necessary. This is a fresh install of XP on a new drive (6 weeks)  - XP Home SP2 version 2002, build 2600.

Before I close, may I quote your comments to Pinnacle Tech Support as they don't have the answer to that error problem?

Enquirer,

I'm glad to have been able to help. And if you think Pinnacle will be receptive to your feedback (so that others can get a solution via a more obvious route of contacting Pinnacle), then go ahead and let them know. They can probably add the .FON version of the MS Sans Serif font to their downloads.

Microsoft is transitioning away from the bitmapped .FON approach, to using TTF fonts for everything. But application developers haven't necessarily updated their applications to match that.

OK  -  thanks again lherrou.   I think I might (respectfully) inform Pinnacle.  From your last comment I'm surprised that more users of that program haven't encountered the same problem.

Thanks for the points and the "A".

Probably it's because Pinnacle Studio is now at v.10, so this would be a problem only for some XP users using an older version of Studio...

A font is a particular size, weight and style of a typeface. Each font is a matched set of type, one piece (called a "sort") for each glyph, and a typeface consists of a range of fonts that share an overall design. With the advent of digital typography, font is frequently synonymous with typeface, although the two terms do not necessarily mean the same thing. In particular, the use of "vector" or "outline" fonts means that different sizes of a typeface can be dynamically generated from one design. Each style may still be in a separate "font file" -- for instance, the typeface "Futura" may include the fonts "Futura roman", "Futura italic", "Futura bold" and "Futura extended" —- but the term "font" might be applied either to one of these alone or to the whole typeface.
