ftp not working

on windows xp home. I dont seem to be able to ftp anything. I keep getting a standard error mesage saying the network may be too busy (the network is just me!). I seem to be able to ftp the sites i want from outside. Anybody have any ideas about how i investigate.

no connection problem ? you can ping the outside ?
is the windows firewall disable ?
do you have any third party firewall software "zone alarm , norton ...

if you use a router to connect to the internet it may be blocking the ftp.
it would help to give more details on you situation

Download  smartftp and use this for ftping. Its better than if you use from IE.

if you have slow internet connection than may be same problem .

u can disable the firewall on ur xp or if u want to keep the firewall on u can enable Passive Mode in ur ftp client.

Ive already disabled the firewall. Ive also tried from another computer i temporarily hooked up vie the same router- that allows me to ftp, so i suppose its a local computer thing. How do i investigate the local ftp settings?

connection is fine. I can pingthe outside and the other computer. I have used ie6 and smart ftp and via the visual studio 2005 built in ftp client.
