how to stop Yahoo Messenger from opening on my desktop upon connecting to the internet.

I went into preferences and unchecked the box that said it would open upon internet connection. It did not stop it. Rebooted twice the box is still unchecked and the thing still opens up. I did get a new version (not by choice) today when a larger version turned up on my desktop when I rebooted at 10 am. It was not there when I booted up at 8:30, so it must be just a coincidence than they came out with a new version during that 90 minute time frame.

Yahoo messenger is not on the list under the startup tab.
Go to windows explorer and navigate to here (obviously your username will be under documents and settings and not what I put in the path below):

C:\Documents and Settings\Your_Windows_user_name_here\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Yahoo messenger should not be updating by itself, usually it will prompt you to install a newer version.  If you cannot disable it under preferences, uninstall the program and reinstall the newest version.

Check preferences again and make sure you do not have it set to start when Windows starts.

I forgot to mention that if you see a link to Yahoo Messenger in the C:\Documents and Settings\jaherendeen\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder, remove it from that folder.

the final start up folder is totally empty. I was in there earlier and all that was in there, and deleted was Office 4.3 and Open Office 2.0
Ok maybe it's hiding in the registry, try under run type RegEdit (starts up your registry editor) now before you do anything else it’s probable a good Idea to back up your registry so click File>Run>Export and name it whatever you want (I usually name it based on the current date) then you can either search for Yahoo or alternately I believe it’s located under HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Run  or (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Run) I believe the name might be Yahoo pager (instead of messenger), then right click over the entry for yahoo and click delete.
