Exchange 2003 Performance Monitoring

Does anyone have advice on using perfmon with Exch2003? I am trying to log total messages that have been processed and the Explain window doens't explan a whole lot and MS's website doesn't seem to have a lot either. I've looked at all the various monitors, but get strange reads from them. What I'm trying to do is to get a cumlative reading of (since last restart):
1. Total messages the server has processed
2. Total internal messages processed
3. Total outbound messages processed
4. Total inbound messages prcocessed

The readings I get just seem really high. For example I'm using Trend to display total total messages scanned and it seems to jack the number up by 3 for every message it scans, for internal messages I using MSEXchangeIS Transport Driver\Local Delivery and sometimes it will move 1 for one message (I test during off times) and then sometimes 3,4 or more. Does this include things like appointments tasks and such?

Any advice would be appreicated.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. The ones that I run on my servers are

SMTP Server /Messages Delivered Total
SMTP Server /Messages Received Total
SMTP Server /Messages Sent Total

That captures a lot of the Internet traffic numbers. Don't forget that any spam filters may cause those numbers to vary.

I will also run

However for stats, I find that enabling Message Tracking then using one of the tools to process those logs gives a better idea of the message flow.

What tools would you recommend to process messages?

The best one I have found is Quest Message Stats. It is a bit pricey though.
There are other options that do similar things, plus if you have Microsoft MOM you can get a version of Quest Message Stats that uses that.
