did you use the scrubbber as described here ?

Tried that. Then got "Internal Error 2753. hpobrt07_Exe_bin_all_all_25" when I ran setup to Remove software.

There is a WindowsXP 06-2004 driver available at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?dlc=en&lc=en&product=57769&lang=en&cc=us&os=228

You might try it rather than the CD.

That is "a1403_05_enu_xp.exe"
I have downloaded it already. Never had a CD :-)

at this point, i see no other option than uninstallling the software by hand :
look in program files for a HP folder and delete it.
look in regedit for references to the printer, and delete them (it is wise to make a backup before starting)

Online chat did not help. All suggestions offered resulted in the same result after about 8 hours of chat. There result is still "Internal Error 2753. hpobrt07_Exe_bin_all_all_25" when I run setup to Remove software. Even after using the Scrubber. I might just have to reinstall XP

-system restore to a previous date
-run sfc /scannow from the run box
-as you said,  a clean install
