Hard drive not found

I recently purchase a dell computer that came preinstalled with windows xp. Now that accidentally deleted the partition while playing with that, I cant install windows any more. This one did not come with a CD and when I use my old winxp disk, says hard drive not found. It is showing up in system setup. I went into diagnostics and it says that the test passed. why is it then not reading the hard drive.

peterabel2002,
YOU deleted the PARTITION???
if so YOU MUST RE CREATE the partition to make the drive work
and make the partition active

do these with  FDISK

Would help to know what model Dell you have and why $10 is so important to you.  Dell doesn't ship the XP CD unless you buy it from them for $10.

That aside, your problem is that the system is too new.  You need to download the drivers for your Dell's controller.  Then provide them on floppy disk when you are prompted by the CD EARLY in setup by pressing F6.

First thing....
If that's a new unit, you can call Dell tech support and ask for the disk. They wont charge you. Although Leew sounds somewhat familiar.
Now again .. if your hard drive is being detected in system setup means,

This is a SATA drive and does not have the controller driver for that on OS disk. To obtain the driver, you can go to
http://support.dell.com/support/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
and choose the product model and go to drivers page. Download the Serial ATA driver and create a floppy disk using that.
On running, it would give you instruction on creating a floppy disk. Create the disk then.
Start you computer with the CD and while loading files, when prompted, hit F6. After loading the file, it would ask you for the drivers. Just put in the floppy disk and it would do the trick. Make sure you choose the right product model while downloading the driver !!
