Outlook 2003 clients cannot open or accept tasks

Two windows xp SP2 machines both with outlook 2003 installed (latest updates as well) cannot open or accept tasks from each other. Up until recently we havn't had a problem. However; now when one computer sends a task to another it appears in the inbox, when you click on it you can preview it in the reading pane, but you cannot doubleclick the task to open it and view it. If you hit the accept button in the preview pane nothing happens. Virus scans have been run on both machines and came up negative. Please help!

Greetings, Dfoster05.

I'd start by running Detect and Repair from the Help menu.  Outlook may have a damaged file.  If that doesn't help, then I suggest creating a new profile for the user.  Go to the Control Panel and double-click the Mail icon.  Create a new profile and make it the default.  Have the user start Outlook and try accepting a task.

Cheers!

having the same exact problem ... it was working fine until i recently updated it with microsoft .. now the tasks cant be accepted.  I havent found a solution yet .. i will post when i find it (if i do)
Ok here is what I found ...
It is a problem with the SP2 that was recently released this last December.  I have found many sites out there of people complaining since updating.  What I did is simply roll back my system using 'System Restore' to the day BEFORE I updated.  System Restore does NOT affect files, emails, etc ..

It worked like a charm for me. Here are some groups straight from the g-men that other people have also encountered.

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&q=outlook+2003+assign+task&qt_s=Search

On the Microsoft front -- they released a statement that it IS a bug in the recent SP2 and it is fixed in the next SP3 -- but that won't be released until mid to late february.  So I guess for now we are all screwed :)

I hope that that helps somewhat ...

Heya all, I went back to the site yesterday and uninstalled all the hotfixes before sp2 and couldn't open any of the tasks still, so I went ahead and uninstalled office and reinstalled it, turning off automatic updates on the one machine until they release a fix for it. I did notice that I still couldn't open tasks so I emailed a task from another computer and the new one went through. It'll be next week before I go back to the site but when I do I'll try to uninstall that individual hotfix and see what happens!
When i reinstalled I wasn't able to open old tasks either.  Luckily I had a partner who assigns them to me so he had a record of them.  He put them all in 1 email file and send them over to me. I just dragged them to the tasks and voila` they all worked :)
Listen trust me I had the exact same problem.... Caused myself a huge headache with uninstalls.  Do the steps I told you and I PROMISE it will work WITH ONE ACCEPTION:  Current TASK REQUEST will not work.  But have someone send you a NEW task request after you uninstall the hotfix and IT WILL WORK.

The HotFix actually strips some of the code out of the email containing the TASK REQUEST upon reciept that is why old emails won't work that were downloaded during this hotfix.  I assure you if you simply install every hotfix and update EXCEPT KB892843  (or uninstall it if you already installed it) all NEW TASK REQUEST WILL WORK

Cross my heart!   Give it a try!

Wish I was that lucky...
Hey everyone, thanks for all of your help. I uninstalled the hotfix last week sometime and it's been running smoothly ever since!
