High CPU Utilization in Sybase
Hello,
I have a Unix server with Sybase Server running on it .
It has 4 cpu and it is running at full capacity .
How woould I find out ,what is hogging up up the system resources ..
And would like to trouble shoot too....

Some general comments first:
1) High CPU isn't a bad thing. It means your hardware is correctly sized for your current load and you are making good use of what you paid for! 8-> 100% is bad as that implies waits, but there's nothing to be upset by if your box is running constantly around 80%.
2) Sybase ASE CPU utilisation is not the same as host CPU utilisation. A lot of what ASE does is waiting (for a lock, for disk, for network) and because that waiting is done via spinlocks ("sit and spin" while waiting), that will look like work to host-level utilities like ps, vmstat and so on. This is why bret asked for some sp_sysmon results, because we don't know how busy ASE is without it.
For example, suppose vmstat tells you dataserver processes are collectively using 90% of CPU. But sp_sysmon might show average engine utilisation is just 50%. This means only 50% of the time a dataserver is running on a physical CPU is actual work being done. In this scenario, ASE is only using 50% x 90% = 45% of the total host CPU.
It's very common to see the host report high utilisation while ASE says it isn't doing much. ASE doesn't count waiting - the host does.
3) In the output you posted, the four dataserver processes are collectively using only 9.2% of the CPU! And because that is a host-level statistic, that *includes* all the waits for locks, disk and network. ASE is almost idle here. This is not a box that is running anywhere near capacity. All of the processes you show in your ps snapshot don't even sum to 20% CPU utilisation...
So, as bret says, more information please! Can we get some Solaris results like top and vmstat when things are busy, as well as (say) a 5 minute sp_sysmon (run: sp_sysmon "00:05:00" ).
So in summary, it is normal and expected to see CPU high as reported by the host... but even that isn't happening here. 8->

Ok, that looks like a busy server! 8->
Notice the difference in utilisation - "top" shows 98% user CPU, but sp_sysmon says average engine utilisation is 81.5%. This is the difference I was saying in an earlier comment.
What's causing this? In sp_sysmon, under the Task Management section, look at context switches. This says "why did I stop doing work?" The overwhelming cause is "Network Send", so this ASE thinks it's interrupting useful work to constant send results over the network.
At the bottom of sp_sysmon, in the Network section, we see the average bytes sent per packet is 477. The default Sybase packet size is 512 bytes, so these packets are full. Since we know from context switches that most of the interruption is in sending packets - packets that are almost full - the single best thing we could do here is to use a larger network packet size. ie. if you have to empty a bathtub, it's a lot faster to use a bucket than a spoon! Same amount of water to shuft either way, but fewer trips needed with a larger container.
To increase the packet size, you have to configure the server but the client must also explicitly request a larger size. Despite the name, "default network packet size" does *not* change the default size used by all client connections! So if you don't have the ability to get into the client and change the packet size, there's little point attempting this.
I will say, though, you should check the setting of
sp_configure "tcp no delay"
If this is set to 1, reset it to 0. Tcp no delay says send packets immediately rather than letting them fill a bit more. When packet sizes are this large, we definitely want that delay. You have to have SA permissions to change this, and it needs a reboot.
Some other items:
- increase "memory per worker process" (default is 1024, you're using 5018, suggest 4096)
- increase "max SQL text monitored" (default is 1024, you're using 1829, suggest 2048)
- increase "user log cache size" (default is 2048, you're filling that 10% of the time, suggest 4096)
- increase "deadlock checking period" (default is 500, suggest 750)
- convert default data cache from strict to relaxed (suitable when cache hit rate is > 99%)
- add large I/O (suits sequential I/O)
- increase database log I/O size (needs large I/O pools as above)
