I am thinking about using a layer to display a search form. I am wondering what the best solution is for this. Here is my scenario.

When a user clicks a nav image in my horizonal nav at the top of the page, a layer would turn on right below it with a search form. Filling out the form and clicking submit would obviously take you to another page.

What are the best practices about making the box dissappear? When they roll off the layer? A few seconds after they roll off? Put a close "X" in the corner? What are the browser issues with using the layer for the search these days?

Thanks for the input.
