I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I meant, are you familiar with the LaCie's Ethernet Disk 1 TB that runs Windows XP Embedded?

Hi,

Although we aren't using this product, we were considering using one of these until I found the following reviews which weren't very favorable:

http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/LaCie_Ethernet_Disk_800GB/4505-3382_16-31212747.html?tag=pdtl

http://pcworld.pricegrabber.com/rating_getprodrev.php?product_id=773717&id_type=M

Then I called LaCie and tried to get a demo but no dice.  However, if you buy one,  they will let you return it within 30 days no questions asked if you don't like it.

We finally ended up using LaCie BigDisk Extreme 600 Gig USB units hooked to our Linux NAS Server.  They are pretty fast.  I'm not sure about embedded Windows since you can't tune things like disk caching or the IP stack and socket parameters which we had to  tweak a lot to get the best performance from our dedicated Linux-based NAS Server.

Travis,

Thank you for your information.  I had read those reviews, but they have old information, back then the disk lacked the Gigabit Ethernet adapter, but now it does.  Also, you can get it with up to 2tb in disk.  I am purchasing 1tb at 1/4th of the cost of a server with the same disk capability.

The second review you listed worries me, but I am not sure about the intregration between windows embedded and macs.

I agree, the links are dated.  I looked hard at the exact unit you plan to try, the 2TB one.  I think it has some significant improvements over its predecessors also.  But I do know that when we set up Gigabit components on our net there's always significant tweaking needed to make it really work well.  I almost want to tell you to go for it so you can tell me how it works first-hand! But... Instead I am wishing you good luck on this and if you call LaCie before you buy, you can probably get them to extend the money-back return period.  They said they'd do that for us.  At least I can offer you that!

Regards,
Travis
