Hi: This is a Toshiba LAPTOP running windows XP Pro SP1. First of all , the computer was restarting repeatidly . I use the Recovery Console (chkdsk command) and then computer restarted as usua but with a problem.I tryed then to run WINDOWS UPDATE and the link  form startup menu was gone. I tried from control panel and when it went through a message about that the system administrator disabled windows update. Then I loged as ADMINISTRATOR in safe mode . I went to: run gpedit.msc and  made sure that under system configuration and user configuration there is nothing configured(enabled I mean) . Then I run in normal mode and I tried again to run Windows update from control panel and after many times I received 36 updates from microsoft. Then I restarted the computer and I tried again to go www.windowsupdate.com and it looks like that is going to to connect to that site but after the "Welcome to microsoft update" the page dissapear. I run spysweeper and found and deleted 4 spywares. So I am in need to find the answer of why the windows upadete link is not showing in the startup menu ,and why I can not get updates directly from microsoft page?.

windows update is in the system properties page on the Automatic Updates tab. I believe this was first introduced in SP1. in any case, you can go to windows update in IE by clicking on Windows Update in the tools menu. it hasn't been MS's practice to put it in the start menu for a long time now.

Guys: I want to thank you for your comments about the windows update link, but unfortunally last friday night the computer was stolen from my place and I could not apply your comments. I want to know what I can do in this case (about points). Also, I just want to let you know that when I tried different sites other than windows update , the surfing is good , so It looked like more software (priviliges) issues that hardware (HD).Like I said I don't have the laptop anymore, so I guess I'll never find the solution.I 'll be waiting for the moderator to advise me about the points
