AUTORUN in a USB key

I need to find a product that enables me to AUTORUN a program when a key is plugin : (this is poissble only with a HARDWARE solution : no soft to be installed).

I found a company (HAGIWARA that makes such keys: UDRW keys, but they cannot ship these keys to FRANCE !)

Someone knows another company that makes suck usb keys ? I cannot beleive they are the only one company worldwide to make these keys.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You don't need any fancy applications, just create a text file autorun.ini at the root of the USB drive.

the contents should look like;

[autorun]
ICON=AUTORUN.EXE
OPEN=AUTORUN.EXE

ICON is used to set the icon for the CD and can point to any file that has an icon you want to use (the option is optional, if not used remove the line)
OPEN is used to oppen an application, this can be set to any executable file on the cd (you will need to use the full path of the file or place it in the root folder of the CD)

This will not get you any fancy user interface, but when you insert the CD the application listed in OPEN will open

For more info see this topic http://www.experts-exchange.com/Miscellaneous/Q_21731056.html

Good luck

for your knowledge, AUTORUN.INF olny works with READONLY devices: you should read a little bit more about this topic before trying to answer my question.

Autorun.ini does not work only with readonly devices.  I have an autorun.ini on my USB drive and it works fine

You autorun.inf runs on your USB because YOU (or other program) HAVE FORCED IT which is NOT THE DEFAULT BEHAVIOUR ON XP/2000 !

Thank you for the lovley insults, just because we have a difference of opinion dosen't mean that you have to become offensive.  I KNOW WHAT WORKS ON MY USB DEVICE I CREATED THE AUTORUN.INI FILE MYSELF AND IT WORKS WHENEVER I INSERT MY THUMB DRIVE, THERE IS NO FORCING GOING ON.  IF YOU DON'T LIKE MY ANSWER IGNORE IT DO NOT INSINUATE THAT I DO NOT KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT YOU DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING.
yarekAuthor Commented:
Sorry.
I hope you did not get my interpret my answers like an insult.
But believe me, AUTORUN.INF ONLY works with READONLY devices that's why HAGIWARA usb key is a special type of key that is divided in 2 parts: 1 writeable and the second is a kind of CDROM rewrite partition that allows the AUTORUN.
So when I plug the key there are 2 drives on it (for instace G: and H:) G is READONLY may be AUTORUN
when you plug a normal usb key with an autorun, NOTHINg HAPPEN unless you specify an action inthe REGEDIT

Accepted,

I did nothing to my reistry and my usb thumb drive auto runs when I insert it.  I have a kingston data traveler eleite and I have created the autorun so it starts the application that lets me loginto the encrypted part.  Don't know why it's working, but it is.  If it shoulden't be working then I guess I should just be glad that it works.
yarekAuthor Commented:
Do you have the COMPLETE reference an url) of your kingston data traveler eleite so I can have a look at it ?
Maybe it has a specail feature that works the way I am looking for !
Erik BjersPrincipal Systems AdministratorCommented:
sory no complete URL, but you can go to Kingston.com

According to Microsoft (from the link yarek provided above) "Note  Autorun.inf files are not supported under Microsoft Windows XP for drives that return DRIVE_REMOVABLE from GetDriveType."

Here is a link to a free utility you can install on your XP system that causes it to automagically search removable devices (like USB/pen drives) for and to process autorun.inf files:

RatOmeterCommented:
I just installed and tried the USBAutoRun program I linked above.  Worked like a charm for me.  Also includes a utility to help you create your own autorun.inf file (for those who don't wish to type ;)
yarekAuthor Commented:
This is exactly the kind of program I CANNOT use for my project : I CANNOT install any program BEFORE ! ! !
I am looking for something like www.hsc-us.com/  but they cannot ship theit product to FRANCE !
Someone else konws any alternative to this GREAT product ?
RatOmeterCommented:
This one looks like it may require that you buy a minimum quantity and have the seller preload your autorun apps on it:

Here is another distributor for the one you mentioned, maybe they will ship to the EU:

From this link: http://store.creativeinfluence.com/mini-pen-drive-usb-flash-drive.html

Their "checkout" page implies that international orders are accepted:

"If you are an international customer, please email info@hscus.com for international shipping rate."
