Problems playing Command & Conquer 95 + Red Alert 95 on Win98SE parition
Hi,

I used to play C&C 95 + Red Alert 95 on my PC but since I got WinXP I was no longer able to play these games. I read forums online to allow you play these games on WinXP but this disabled network play and I didnt want this. So therefore I added a Windows 98SE partition to my PC. So now I have a Win98se & WinXP bootable options on my PC. Both which work fine and I have a Win98 SE partition to run C&C 95 and Red Alert 95.
Unfortunately after all my hard work, C&C 95 and Red Alert 95 doesnt work when running Win98se. When I try to load the games nothing happens. I can see the process running in the application list when I look in the Task Manager window but no game loads at all. I can load the DOS version of Red Alert but this has no LAN play (which is the whole reason why I'm doing this).

I suspect the problem could be the resolution of my PC. I have tried changing the settings from 32bit to 16 bit and the pixel size to 800X600 but no luck there.

My PC specs are Pentium 4, 1.7Ghz, 768RAM, 64MB video card, using a NVidia GeForce 2 MX/MX 400 card and have the latest Direct X software.

So should this of worked? Has anyone any experience with this?

Any help much appreciated.
Thanks,
4aces.

Taking into account that EA is releasing Command & Conquer: The First Decade, including every single game of the saga, but fully compatible with Windows XP, I would buy it, which would be way easier than dealing with configuration issues.
By the way, I haven't seen any "good" patches for the old games.

Answer to your particular question:
Have you installed your VGA drivers?
Have you installed the latest patches?
Have you installed C&C in Windows 98SE or XP? You have to install it on Windows 98 and, if possible, in the same partition.

Have you installed your VGA drivers?
I installed a NVida graphics driver compatible with Win98se. I didnt install any VGA drivers unless they came with Win98se. Do I still need to install them? Where could I find these?

Have you installed the latest patches?
No. I didnt install any of the patches. I can try this but I do have another PC which runs Win98SE and runs C&C 95 + Red Alert 95 fine, and this PC has none of the patches installed.

Have you installed C&C in Windows 98SE or XP? You have to install it on Windows 98 and, if possible, in the same partition.
On the Windows 98SE partition. I created the Win98SE partition first (on the C: Drive) and then the WinXP partition (F: Drive). I tested the Win98SE partition with Tiberian Sun to see if it is working, and it loads the game fine.

Windows seems to be OK. Try reinstalling the game and installing DirectX.

Tried reinstalling the game. No luck. The Load Up screen of C&C 95 appears, I select to play the game but nothing happens. I can see the C&C95 process in the task manager but thats as far as it goes. The DirectX version on my PC is 9.0c (latest one i think)

I assume that DirectX is backwards compatible with earlier versions of DirectX? Like i dont need to install the version that comes with C&C 95 on my PC?

The only thing i can think of is that my resolution is too high for the game. But changing the settings here didnt do anything, plus it works ok on another PC (WinSE98) with 32bit colours.

Can anyone help?

Ok I'll give that a go. I found some software to remove the current version of directX off my Windows 98SE partition and after that I'll install the earlier version that comes with C&C 95. I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers.

Yes it was DirectX. Thanks Nouareii.

However I had to do it the hard way, by reformatting and reinstalling Win98se as I couldnt seem to remove DirectX 9.
I think what I did originally was allow Window Updates to download & install DirectX 9.0c and it seems once it is installed, it is near impossible to remove, or to revert back to older versions.

Anyway thanks for all your help.

I'm glad it worked (though it did the hard way :p).

Computer games are video games played on a personal computer, mobile device or video game console. Their defining characteristics include a lack of any centralized controlling authority, a greater degree of user control over the video-gaming hardware and software used and a generally greater capacity in input, processing, and output.
