Create mail account in child domain from an other domins in forest?

Hi all,

If I have a root domain called test.com, and 2 child domains called hk.test.com and uk.test.com. Now, I have hk.test.com installed an exchange2003 and I want to know is there any methods to create an mail-enable account in uk.test.com because I dont want to setup exchange server in uk.test.com.

For example, I would like to create an account "user1@test.com.uk" in uk.test.com by using hk 's exchange server resource. Is it possible to do that?

Thanks

Not 100% clear on what you are trying to accomplish but if you are trying to allow users in the uk.test.com domain to have mailbox-enabled accounts with the mailbox located on the Exchange server in the hk.test.com domain then yes, that is possible.  To do that, you just have to run domain prep on the uk.test.com domain and then you will be able to create mailbox-enabled accounts in that domain and assign them to a mailbox on the exchange server in the hk.test.com domain.
Matt's dead on

Another tip:
Once you create the mail enabled account, you won't be able to see the mail properties for that user, unless you see it from "Actice Directory Users & computers" of Exchange server.

If you want to manage this from other other domain, install just the "Exchange System Manager" on one of the DCs and you shall see the mail properties for mail enabled user.

Just an FYI :)

Hi Matt_Heuer,

After running domainpre on uk.test.com, I cannot see the mail enabled option when I create new user account in "Active Directory user and Computer" in uk.test.com.

Is it really need to install "Exchange System Manager" in uk.test.com???

Thanks
Yes I would go ahead and install the system manager in that domain.  That should clear up this issue.

Hi Cole,

But installing exchange system manager is not equal to install exchange server? What is the difference between only installing exchange system manager and typical installation otpion?

Also, if I only installing exchange system manager, is it chooing " Deploy first exchange server" => " Install new exchange server" => " run domainpre" => "run setup" => and then in drop down menu, select only " exchange system manager tool" ,

or choosing "install addidtional exchange server" => " run domainpre" => "run setup" => and then in drop down menu, select only " exchange system manager tool"

Thanks
The system manager is not the same thing as the actual exchange server.  You will want to choose install and additional exchange server and then select the esm tool from the drop down.

Cole
Then, if I choose "additional exchange server" and then only installing esm, whether I need to install ems in HK 's administrative group? Or creating a new administrative group called uk and install ems in uk?
I dont know my concept is wrong or not, if wrong, please carify.

Thanks
Youll want to keep it in the same administrative group.

Cole
I have follow the steps to do, I can create mail-enabled account in uk.test.com by storing in hk.test.com exchange server, however, I cannot see the uk user mailbox in hk exchange server.

However, I cannot login to exchange server by that user account.
For example, I created an mail-enble account in uk, then I use outlook and OWA to login hk exchange server, but cannot access.

Thanks
Check if the user you created is being stamped with an email address.

Right click that user, and select properties, email address tab, do you see an email address stamped for that user?

Do you see other exchange related tabs?

If you don't, then you Recipient Update Service is not working as it should.

Check that.  And I asked you to send an email from any other account to this user.... that is also another way to initialize the mailbox.

cool?
Now, I can use outlook to login. However, I cannot use OWA to access. But I have enable that account to have OWA access

Thanks
