XP SP2 with Intel i810 graphics hangs with simple games

All,
I have just got back from my hols. I met up with a friend, who lives out there a couple of times. Just as I was saying goodbye - I was on way to pack to go to the airport (Why he did not say earlier) - but his Uk purchased
PC World eMachines e350 was playing up. He had had memory upgraded ages ago and it has been okay for months. It only seems to freeze with games - the PC just locks and has to be unplugged. These are the windows XP built in games. I only had about 10 minutes, but I could not get error. I checked event logs and nothing. AV is up to date and he has not been connected to net or added software- he has been waiting for a phone to be installed. I looked in bios and graphics only show 512kb or 1MB. But XP thinks it is using 32MB. I could not see anything else wrong. Has anyone got any ideas? - he does have rebuild disks. I checked Graphics driver version when I got home and all okay.
