Using both Ethernet post for redundancy

I have a server on a LAN that is critical for NFS. I had some troubles this morning because it was not reachable. I have a second ethernet port on the box and was wondering how to use that for redundancy. The server goes into a switch. Can I set the second port to the same IP address and run both into the switch? I was scared that would cause some conflicts with both having the same IP. If not, how can I do this?
