Change DTS pkg step name

Does anyone know where SQL server 2000 stores the step name when you create a task in a DTS package? Example, I created an 'Execute SQL Task' and gave it a name as 'Create Stored Procedures'. Yet if you look at the DTS log or in 'sysdtspackagelog' or 'sysdtssteplog' it stores the internal name 'DTSStep_DTSExecuteSQLTask_5'. I have several 'Execute SQL Tasks' in this DTS package and they are being changed often. I would like to use the msdb..sysdtssteplog information but I need to have my description, not the internal description.....
Where is that value being stored? I think it may be being stored in msdb..sysdtspackages as the packagedata field. This field is an 'Image' datatype and I can not read the values.

I am attempting to use this table rather than creating a unique logging method (to my app)  seems mad to create a logging method and to not allow the steps to be named cept for the 'DTSStep_DTSExecuteSQLTask_(1, 2...n)'

Again, thanks for your help.

It is not trivial to change it, without messing up the whole package.  Check out the Name property for the task using "Disconnected Edit..." under Package.  This will break your Steps, so you will need to either remove them first or rename appropriately.

Make sure to make a backup first and good luck :)

i made some changes in the disconnected edit and it threw the whole package off...if i am better of to remove them how can i make this name at the intial setup of the task.

How do i refix the steps...?

I suppose i now really need to know how to implement that the name is set at the begining of the build rather than in the middle.

Than I am glad I warned you :)

Perhaps after creating the task you can go to "Disconnected Edit..." and change it immediatelly.  However, your best bet is to live with it.  In your ActiveX script use constants.
