yeah, open the ports.  What type of device do you have controlling your internet connection?

1. Dont know how to open ports
2. No device controling connection, cable modem plugged into desktop pc desktop plugged to laptop using CAT5 crossover
3. Norton runs on desktop and thats been giving me trouble lately so have disabled it
are you trying to run kazaa on the desktop, or the laptop, or both?
runs fine on desktop, wont connect on laptop
Check your cable modem for a built in firewall. Also, are you running windows XP? Windows XP also has a built in firewall. go to control panel --> firewall
you can check if it's being blocked by windows XP by goinging to control panel --> firewall --> advanced -->security logging settings --> log dropped packets.

Run Kazza again and create some traffice

Then check the log file C:\Windows\pfirewall.log

On your modem you usually have to go to a web interface and check.
i have disabled all firewalls on the laptop, and if there was a built in firewall in the modem wudnt it not work on the desktop

The firewall might be screwing you up on the desktop's second NIC, as well as on the laptop. However, you might also have to do some port forwarding tricks to make it work.

Can your laptop get online fine? If so, you probably have to do port forwaring. I assume you're using ICS in Windows XP, so you might want to look at this: http://www.portforward.com/help/personalfirewalls/windowssp2port.htm
i'm using the laptop now to write this
i have put exceptions on for ports 1214 & 3324 + i have added Kazaa to the exceptions list
and it still doesnt work
Uhm... try exchanging the IP's on the laptop and the desktop. If then works, is because your cable modem -or router- is redirecting all traffic to your destop, ie, you can only setup one device to use kaaza at a time.

When your laptop don't work is because the "answers" are being send to your desktop !

So, you must decide wich one, or exchange IP's when needed.

Which version of norton do you have installed?
You said it's been giving you trouble lately, how so?
Have you scanned for viruses/malware?

i get a router and get back to you in a couple of days
if you need guidance on which router to get, let us know
wirth beat me to it, but that's by far the most feasible solution at this point. avoiding the pain in the neck of doing all sorts of funny things to one machine to make another work.
ok gettin router 2moro but have been looking at my desktop pc and it doesnt have the windows firewall option in the control panel is there a way i can get it (Not sure if it was ever there), cause its stopped working on my desktop now cause port 1214 is blocked and i need to do port forwarding to get round it.
