Try using internet connection sharing. Take a look at this link:

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics

mrakajAuthor Commented:
that dont have anything to do with my ?
gbarrientosCommented:
The best way to share your connection in this situation is to use Windows Internet connection sharing (ICS) wizard. Yes, you do have to have a switch to network them, but then you can use ICS to share the connection from your laptop to the other computers. To set up ICS look at the link provided above.

I don't know how it works with a laptop since only 1 network card is there. I do have an office desktop that is hooked up with the internet from the university, and I added another network card to the desktop and set it as a gateway. Then just used a crossed ethernet cable to hook up the laptop with the above networked card, the laptop can get access to internet. Hope helpful.
mrakajAuthor Commented:
well i was reading and i tried this i right click on local area connection --> proparties ---> advanced tab and checked allow othere network users to connect through this computer's internet connection
Shaun84Commented:
If you have a router the the setup i would run is
Router > Switch > all the machines plugged into the switch this would be the best way
ICS is OK but the setup above would be better.
namundayCommented:
Can you just explain a bit more clearly the set up that you have.

Are you saying you have a laptop that can connect to the internet and you want the 3 home computers to connot to the internet through the laptop. If so how does the laptop connect to the internet and what other hardware do you have?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
i have a sprint card that were ever i go if my sprint phone works then i have iternet in my laptop and i pay 60 a month and its high speed the website----> http://powervision.sprint.com/mobilebroadband/ this is what i have and running win xp home
Shaun84Commented:
From what i understand of your setup the setup i have advised before would work perfectly fine.
mrakajAuthor Commented:
but i dont understand that one i dont know what to click on after i click on the web site that you gave me
mrakajAuthor Commented:
that way i am trying it but it dont work
Shaun84Commented:
When you say it is not working could you explain what is happening in more detail?
If you connect router to switch do your PC's get an IP (Start > Run > CMD click Ok then in there type ipconfig)
could you show what IP's Show
eg 192.168.1.2
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1
namundayCommented:
Before broadband, i used to share my dial up modem over my network which wasn't possible using internet connection sharing which only seems to work with a dsl type connection ( i dont actually know anyone who has successfully shared a usb dsl connection using ics ) by using a program called proxy+ http://www.proxyplus.cz/ take a look at that and se if it helps.

mrakajAuthor Commented:
i connect the laptop that has the sprint card to the swich were the othere 3 computers are connected and when i go to start > run > cmd> ipconfig no ip address comes up nothing
namundayCommented:
you need to assign every pc a unique ip address in the range of 192.168.1.xxx and make sure they all have the same workgroup eg 255.255.255.0 and are all in the same workgroup. Before you worry about the internet you need to get the network running
Shaun84Commented:
Can the other 3 machines get internet access through the switch?
What IP's are on the other machine when you check ipconfig on them?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
i did all that i got my network running they all have ip addres and another thing is i have a router not a swich i dident know that till now its a linksys router model :wrt54gx ver.2 and i have to computer with a wire and 1 with  wireless and i have my laptop with the sprint card and i have the wire from my laptop to the router and when i try to go to the internet it says limited or no connectivity
Shaun84Commented:
On one of the machines do an ipconfig write the IP's down
eg 192.168.1.2
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1
go to the one that isnt working and go to start > Control panel >Network connections
right click on the LAN or Wireless whatever your using then click properties
once in properties highlight internet protocol tcp/ip and click properties then just put the same details in for Ip subnet mask and default gateway but put the IP acouple up from the one you took seetings from
eg 192.168.1.10
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1
mrakajAuthor Commented:
were dos this one go
192.168.1.10
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1
Shaun84Commented:
go to the PC that isnt working and go to start > Control panel >Network connections

Subnet Mast:255.255.255.0
Default Gateway:192.168.1.1

and specify the DNS
Primary DNS:192.168.1.1
Secondary DNS: You can leave this one blank
mrakajAuthor Commented:
ok did that still it dont work
Shaun84Commented:
Right go to start > run > cmd
then that opens a command prompt
type ping 192.168.1.1 and press enter
what u get back?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
non of the computers work but the laptop that has the sprint card
mrakajAuthor Commented:

Shaun84Commented:
Right so just so i have this correct you have a linksys router?
laptop works OK but the other 3 machines dont?
the ones that dont work how are they connected to the router?

Could you be abit clearer with the setup please. Thanks
namundayCommented:

i have one laptop with a sprint card that has internet i use this laptop for work and when i come home i have 3 other computers that i want online the 3 computers 2 are wired and one is wireless . what i did is i right click on local area connection > proparty>advanced and checked share this internet and then i put the wire from that laptop that has the sprint internet to the linksys router were the other 3 computers are connected to and i was hopping that all the computers then would have internet i hope this helps
mrakajAuthor Commented:
yes the laptop that has the internet with the sprint card is
68.30.65.161
255.255.255.255
68.30.65.161

the other computers
192.168.1.10
225.255.255.0
192.168.1.1

192.168.1.5
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1

192.169.1.104
255.255.255.0
192.1681.1
Shaun84Commented:
Ok go back in and untick the bock to share the connection, as each machine is connected to the router then they will get there internet access from there rather than the laptop
once you have done that give each machine an IP they way i stated before giving them ips:
IP:192.168.1.10
Subnet Mast:255.255.255.0
Default Gateway:192.168.1.1
Primary DNS:192.168.1.1
then the next pc:
IP:192.168.1.11
Subnet Mast:255.255.255.0
Default Gateway:192.168.1.1
Primary DNS:192.168.1.1
and other:
IP:192.168.1.12
Subnet Mast:255.255.255.0
Default Gateway:192.168.1.1
Primary DNS:192.168.1.1

let me know once you have done this
Shaun84Commented:
ignore that post mrakaj
Shaun84Commented:
mrakaj on the one laptop go to www.whatismyip.com
what IP shows? is it 68.30.65.161?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
no but there is no internet in the rouhter only the laptop has internet and thats threw sprint
mrakajAuthor Commented:
my laptop has internet were ever it gose even if i go 500 miles a way from my house
mrakajAuthor Commented:
yes 68.30.65.161
namundayCommented:
for the time being can you remove the sprint card and just concentrate on getting the network working before the internet. Make sure that the laptop is automatically getting an ip address, you need it to be in the same 192.168.1.xx range as the others before carrying on
namundayCommented:
once all of the pcs are in the same range, from each pc ping 192.168.1.1 and also another pc ie if pc is assigned 192.168.1.10 then ping 192.168.1.11
Shaun84Commented:
From what i have found the router is a Broadband router
the 3 machine look like they are configured correctly so the next steps is just to configure the router
on one of the machines that isnt working open internet explorer and type in the address 192.168.1.1
what come up?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
ooo got you
mrakajAuthor Commented:
yes the laptop get and ip
192.168.1.102
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1
Shaun84Commented:
yeah the IP's are fine on the 3 PC's. its just the router that needs configured for broadband now mrakaj
namundayCommented:
so when you don't have the sprint card in all of the machines are in the same network range, correct ?

can they all ping each other?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
yes they can
mrakajAuthor Commented:
ok and how do i do broadband configure
namundayCommented:
shaun84, although mrakaj has a broadband router, he is not using it as the broadband source
mrakaj, when you put the sprint card back in do the ip addresses change, if not
Shaun84Commented:
type in 192.168.1.1 into the internet explorer?
Who have you signed up with for Broadband?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
no one thats what i was trying to say i dont have dsl or cable
Shaun84Commented:
I see, so just the sprint as the internet access.
well you will still need to access the router and change its IP onto the same range as ICS runs on.
as ICS rus on 192.168.0.x and router is on 192.168.1.x
so access the router on 192.168.1.1 and then have a look and see if you can change its address to be 192.168.0.254 subnet mask as 255.255.255.0
namundayCommented:
in the netwrok properties for the sprint card, select Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection (for the time being make sure all of the firewalls and wep/wpa etc are turned off).
mrakajAuthor Commented:
what is ICS
namundayCommented:
ics is internet connection sharing
mrakajAuthor Commented:
and then do i just put the wire from my laptop to my router and all the computers have internet
Shaun84Commented:
the box that you had checked to share you internet connection thats what ICS is
ICS= Internet connection sharing
I now understand fully what you are trying to setup
on the laptop right click on the sprint connection go to advanced and tick the share my connection box

then on 1 of the 3 pc's go into internet explorer and type 192.168.1.1 and that will access the router
we need to change its IP range
namundayCommented:
shaun, if you look up the post you will see the router is already set up as the gateway with ip 192.168.1.1 so it doesn't need to be chnaged
mrakajAuthor Commented:
when i type 192.168.1.1 the router settings come up
Shaun84Commented:
yes but ics runs on 192.168.0.x so even if you turn on ICS on the laptop the router is giving the PC's 192.168.1.x address so on different ranges so it does need changed
Shaun84Commented:
In the routers settings can you see anything about its IP or anything that refers to DHCP?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
it says dhcp enabled
Shaun84Commented:
can you see anything about being able to change it? we need to change the routers IP to something like 192.168.0.254
we want to keep it enabled though.
mrakajAuthor Commented:
it gives me a list and i can pick what i want the list is
automatic configuration -DHCP
static ip
PPPoE
PPTP
Telstra BigPond
Shaun84Commented:
when you go to automatic configuration -DHCP
what does this show?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
ok when i get in the router is hasn setup tab and on this setup tab it has basic setup-DDNS-MAC Addres Clone-Advanced Routing
mrakajAuthor Commented:
local ip 192.168.1.1 and 255.255.255.0
namundayCommented:
half way down the first page title "basic setup"  you will see router IP change this 192.168.0.1 and reboot
mrakajAuthor Commented:
reboot the router or computer or what
Shaun84Commented:
all we need to do is change its IP to 192.168.0.254
and its dhcp range to 192.168.0.2 up to 192.168.0.253

unfortunatly i cant find any screenshots on this model i cant see where to do this for you
Shaun84Commented:
go to setup and basic setup
mid-way down you should see Local Ip address
change this to 192.168.0.254 then save these settings
have you done this?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
yes but i cant change the 192.168.0.2 up to 192.168.0.253
Shaun84Commented:
thats OK aslong as the local IP address is 192.168.0.1
once you have saved this changee the IP settings on one of the 3 PC's to match this
IP address: 192.168.0.50
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1

then try and get web on this PC
this work?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
ok i changed that but what about the subnet mask do i leave that how it was 255.255.255.0
Shaun84Commented:
yeah that is fine.
mrakajAuthor Commented:
192.168.0.254 wich one now 192.168.0.1
Shaun84Commented:
the machine that has the sprint will already have that address.
the sprint laptop should also have it wired connection into the router now aswell.
mrakajAuthor Commented:
yes but the router dose it have this 192.168.0.1
or this 192.168.0.254
or are you telling me to put this 192.168.0.1 on the laptop with the card
Shaun84Commented:
the laptop that has the card will have added it atomatically when you ticked the share my connection option
to double check this go do an ipconfig in a command promt and it should show the 192.168.0.1 address
mrakajAuthor Commented:
ooo the laptop has this ip allready 192.168.0.1
namundayCommented:
when you enable ics on the laptop, it will automatically become 192.168.0.1 and will act as a dchp server. The router needs to be assigned 192.168.0.x(something other than 1) and have dchp disabled
mrakajAuthor Commented:
yes it has it
mrakajAuthor Commented:
dchp disabled or enabled?????
Shaun84Commented:
on one of the machines did u specify the address i gave before
IP address: 192.168.0.50
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1
Shaun84Commented:
if you mean leaving dhcp enabled on the router? then i would leave it enabled
mrakajAuthor Commented:
ok this is wired when i ping 192.168.1.1 it works but when i ping 192.168.0.254 it dosent 100% loss
Shaun84Commented:
doesnt look like it has save the change we made
again access the router and try and change its IP to 192.168.0.254
mrakajAuthor Commented:
it gets nothing now
Shaun84Commented:
power down the router and then power it back up.
then on one of the machine that we havent changed the IP's on restart it and then once come up do an ipconfig
what IP does it get?
namundayCommented:
mrakaj before you do anything let shaun replay to this.

When you enable ics, that network adapter becomes 192.168.0.1 and also acts as a dchp server. therefore the dchp server in the linsys router needs to be disabled and it also needs to be assigned a static ip of say 192.168.0.50. The sprint card will have an ipaddress assigned by the sprint or whoever that will not be 192.168.0.xxx so this cannot be set up with ics so the laptop Ethernet connection must be set up with ics and I think that connections will need to be bridged

I think we need to get ics enabled on a connection before we start so that the dchp server can be establish and I think it needs to be enabled on the laptop Ethernet port

Shaun, do you agree with this?
Shaun84Commented:
Ok the Laptop config is fine.
the router doesnt matter if dhcp is enabled ort disable as we well need to set each card up startical so that there default gateway is 192.168.0.1 and dns as the same.
because the router is there the ICS will not be able to pass dchp through the router
we wont need to bridge the connection
mrakajAuthor Commented:
ok i restarted the router and the computer and i get
192.168.0.100
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.254
Shaun84Commented:
Ok nearly done now
on each pc go into the tcp/ip settings and give them the fallowing settings

PC1
IP address: 192.168.0.50
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1
mrakajAuthor Commented:
but still i cant go to the router page no more
Shaun84Commented:
you should be able to access it on 192.168.0.254 but even if you cant i dont see that as a major issue at the moment

Can you ping 192.168.0.254?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
request time out 4 times
Shaun84Commented:
very strange as it is giving you an IP address.
in a command prompt type
ipconfig/release
then once you do that do
ipconfig/renew
what IP do you get?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
operating faild as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation
Shaun84Commented:
Ok that card has a static address
go to the PC that isnt working and go to start > Control panel >Network connections
right click on the LAN or Wireless whatever your using then click properties
once in properties highlight internet protocol tcp/ip and click properties
put the dot into obtain an ip address automtically
then restart the PC and do an ipconfig
mrakajAuthor Commented:
Default Gateway: this 192.168.0.1 or this 192.168.0.254 wich one gose there
mrakajAuthor Commented:
put dot werelike ? ... x ... x . x ... or ... x ... x . x .
mrakajAuthor Commented:
i can put dot it dosent let me
Shaun84Commented:
there is 2 options obtain automtically- one we want
or use the fallowing, we need to move to the opition that say obtaiin an IP address autmtically
mrakajAuthor Commented:
how do we do that
Shaun84Commented:
well just above the ip settings you should see these options?
is like a tick box but its dots instead of ticks
mrakajAuthor Commented:
oo i did that
mrakajAuthor Commented:
and i get
192.168.0.100
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.254
Shaun84Commented:
now do an ipconfig what is showing?
Shaun84Commented:
in a command prompt type
ipconfig/release
then once you do that do
ipconfig/renew
what IPs do you get?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
i did that to all the computers and i get
192.168.0.100
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.254

192.168.0.101

192.168.0.254

192.168.0.102
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.254
Shaun84Commented:
can you ping 192.168.0.254 on any of the pc's?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
i did ipconfig/release then ipconfig/renew and i get
192.168.0.100
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.254
mrakajAuthor Commented:
no i cant ping 192.168.0.254 on any of the computers
Shaun84Commented:
restart the router and once its fullyy powered back up try and ping it again
mrakajAuthor Commented:
it wil not ping
Shaun84Commented:
OK. it looks like the router is just causing more hassle than its worth.
I would get a hub/switch in and plug all the machines into that via ethernet this would solve alot of issue.
Do you agree mrakaj ?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
sure but will it work then and what caused this the router was working fine before
mrakajAuthor Commented:
i dont understand because i still can share files threw the computers and print from one printer with 3 of the computers
mrakajAuthor Commented:
we can try this over the router has a reset button on the botom
Shaun84Commented:
can you ping these addresses
192.168.0.102
192.168.0.101
192.168.0.100
192.168.0.1
?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
ping them from were
Shaun84Commented:
one of the 3 PC's
mrakajAuthor Commented:
i can ping all but not 192.168.0.1
Shaun84Commented:
on the laptop with the sprint do and ipconfig and show me all the settings that come up

mrakajAuthor Commented:
they both fail
Shaun84Commented:
does the server have a firewall?
if so can we turn it off?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
they both fail from all three computers
Shaun84Commented:
sorry does the sprint have a firwall i ment?
can we turn  it off?
mrakajAuthor Commented:
the firewall of the 3 computers are all off
mrakajAuthor Commented:
but with the sprint laptop i can ping both
Shaun84Commented:
but can we turn all firewall of on the sprint laptop then get the 3 PC's to ping

yes but you need to disable the firewall on the sprint first
mrakajAuthor Commented:

192.168.0.101  another computer
192.168.0.1    the claptop with sprint card
192.168.0.50   the router?

 i can ping
212.58.240.121  and
192.168.0.1
mrakajAuthor Commented:
no the router is 192.168.0.254    192.168.0.50 is one of the 3 computers
Shaun84Commented:
192.168.0.100  1 computer
192.168.0.101  another computer
192.168.0.1    the claptop with sprint card
192.168.0.50   another computer
192.168.0.254 router.

if you can ping 212.58.240.121 from any of thr 3 machine then put that same set of numbers in the address bar in internet explorer

sorry i have to go but hopefully namunday can help you futher.
namundayCommented:
can you

ping 192.168.0.1 from 1 of the 3 pcs

ping 1 of the 3 pcs from 192.168.0.1
mrakajAuthor Commented:
no i cant no either
namundayCommented:
ok it seems the problem is the communication between the 3 pcs and the laptop

if you remove the sprint card can you ping as above
mrakajAuthor Commented:
i take the card out and still i cant ping
namundayCommented:
is dchp definately turned off on the router

if you remove the sprint card, disable ics on the laptop and manually assign it an address of 192.168.0.102 can you then pin between the laptop and pcs
mrakajAuthor Commented:
i think we did somthing wrong with the router b/c i cant comunicate with it anymore
mrakajAuthor Commented:
yes
namundayCommented:
the fact that you can ping between the 3 computers suggests that communication through the router is working ok are you sure you are enetering the right ip address to access the router
mrakajAuthor Commented:
i dont need to take the card out to ping if i take the cat5 cable from my laptop to my router port one and the other poarts are full they will all work they will ping but when i take it out of port one and put it in the internet resiving in the router then i cant
mrakajAuthor Commented:
what is the router  ip 192.168.0.254 right?
namundayCommented:
try 0.254 or any others you may have used before

the reason i said take card out is to see if the internet card was causing the problem.
mrakajAuthor Commented:
i got it to work thanks for your help
mrakajAuthor Commented:
i dont know why can i still ping 192.168.1.1
namundayCommented:
here what you are trying to achieve

disconnect the sprint card, remove ics and assign all the pcs an ip address from 192.168.0.1  02  03  04 and the router a similar address (whether it be 254 or 50 or 105 whatever just not 192.168.0.1). once you have done this and restarted and everything you should be able to ping between the computers and laptop. This demonstrates that the network portion is working.

Once you know the network portion is working, reinsert the sprint card and enable ics on the laptop network port. This should change the ip address to 192.168.0.1 then try pinging the computers again and report back
mrakajAuthor Commented:
but i turned off all the computers firewall thats now good b/c off virus
namundayCommented:
you can sort everything like that out once you have got things working
Shaun84Commented:
OK did you not have the laptop in one of the ethernet ports when we spoke yesterday?
thats why it didnt work if it was in an ethernet port it would have worked.

start by making sure all 3 PC's and laptop are in the etherner port on the router
once you have done this on the 3 pc's give them the fallowing IP settings

PC1
IP address: 192.168.0.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1

PC2
IP address: 192.168.0.101
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1

PC3
IP address: 192.168.0.102
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1

then move the the sprint laptop
right click the sprint connection and go to properties once in there go to the advanced tab and make sure share this connection box is ticked
once you have done this go to a command prompt and do an ipconfig
it should show
192.168.0.1
255.255.255.0

somewhere in the results
once you have done this try and ping 192.168.0.1 from the 3 pc's if you get replys then you should be able to get internet access on all the machines
