Clarification on Linksys Setup & Config

I have a WAP54G Linksys Access Point and 10 client computers.  They are Xplore Tablet PCs mounted to carts with Cisco wireless LAN adapters. They are completely mobile and roam around a warehouse filling orders for my company.

Previously I had a Linksys WRE54G Range extender in the mix and it worked well,  I have tried re-introducing it to the network but the results are not what I expected. Basically it seems like when I add the Range Extender.....  the signal strength increases near the Range Extender.......BUT  DECREASES directly under the Access Point.
Previously the range extender seemed to do exactly that....increase the range of the wireless network.

I have avoided clouding this issue with all the specs of my SSID, WEP, etc. But please ask if you need to know any of that.

Basically I cant figure out how to get the Range expander to stop acting like a separate AP and to only increase radio strength in my one remaining trouble area with weak signal strength.

Currently if I connect the range expander,  it will connect (blue light)  and connectivity is excellent around the range expander only....  where in the past connectivity was improved near the expander....while being always strong near the access point.

anyone  seen anything  like this?  thanks  in advance
