First, I'm not sure that microchips is exactly where this should be posted. However, since the issue clearly deals with the CPU being used, it's not that far off. (...and I can't find a PC Virtualization channel.)
Here's the deal:
I've two Opteron based systems running on the FoxConn NFPIK8AA platform (nVidia nForce Pro 4 AMD based).
One system runs an Opteron 252 (rev E4, 2.6Ghz) and the other an Opteron 848 (rev SH7-C0, 2.2Ghz).
Both of these systems are pretty fast, and I'm suprised just how well they both run with 2GB ECC Registered PC2100 SDRAM DIMMS.
While I love these systems, I've noticed some really odd and annoying:
The Opteron 848 system with VMWare 5.5 Workstation will NOT run 64bit operating systems. (I am running Windows XP Pro x64 on that box for the host OS.)
However, 64bit OSes WILL run under VMWare Workstation with the Opteron 252 (rev E4).
So my question is this:
What specific differences between the two Opteron cores would account for VMWare not being able to support 64bit guest OSes under VMWare 5.5+ Workstation?
I'm a nice guy, so this is worht 500 points.
