New message envelope does not appear when new mail message is received

Recently, the new mail envelope which used to show up in the notification area upon receipt of new email has ceased to appear.  The advanced email settings for message notification are unchanged and are correct.  What would cause this, and how can I cause the envelope to appear when it should?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If you are using Windows XP, the new email notification icon could be set to "hide always".  To check, bring up your taskbar properties (right click on blank area of the taskbar and select properties).  On the taskbar tab, at the bottom in the 'notification area', click on the 'customize' button next to 'hide inactive icons'.  Make sure "you have new unopened items" has next to it 'hide when inactive' and NOT 'hide always'.

Greetings, dougblack !

If icon is not hidden, it could be push off to the side.  Right click in the System Tray area and select Properties. Make sure the tray is not locked, and the icon is not push to the right or in second row, off the screen.

Best wishes!
