Quantum Dlt1 will not load properly on a Dell server running Windows 2003 server

When I load the DLT1 drivers on the dell server, it appears as though the installation is going fine and at the end I recieve the following error.

WIndows Installation error Code 31.

I can see it in the device manager, however there is a exclamation mark next to it.  I attempt to load the drivers by updating and I get the same result.  Code 31

Can you help???

Download a newer driver onto a floppy or CD, copy to the server and try the install wizard again...this time pointing to the new drivers locally.

I have just tried this and recieved the same error.  I have reseated the cables and the light on the back of the drive is green.  I keep getting the same error that says that the driver didn't load properly.  Code 31

Thats really odd.  Remove the device from device manager, restart the server.  Find the drivers that you copied to the server, right click on the INF file and select install.  Then go to the device manager, refresh, and manually install drivers.
I have done this a few times, I also have 5 different server suits that I have tried this on.  I still get the same effect.
Do you have sp1 installed on the server?
Yes I do have sp1 loaded on the server (Exchange 2003)
2 more questions

did this drive come with the server, do you still have the original installation disks?\

What backup software are you using, or planning on using?  If its Backup Exec, during installtion have it install drivers for your tape drive, see if those work any better....

Unfortunatly I do not have the original installation disk.  I was just trying to get the machince to use the tape backup I really haven't tried to use anything but the windows 2003 built-in back up utility.  I have the software for Veritas 10 do think that would help find a tape driver?

The model of tape dri ve is " Quantum Dlt1 "
I downloaded the driver, loaded veritas 10 and then tried to load this driver and I get the same result.  I can see the DLT driver in the "Device manager" but it has a big yellow exclamation point next to it and it is not usable.

After all of this now I'm wondering if the tape drive is having issues....one of thsoe should have fixed it.  Do you have another test server to try this in?  Are there any settings on the drive itself?  How about cabling, Are you using the correct scsi cable?  SCSI/SCSI2/SCSI3 40/80/160
I have 5 seperate domains that I have to load these DLT1's on.  And I am getting the same result on all the servers that I attempt to load this piece of hardware to.  The only settings on the drive itself is a adjustable number (5).

I know that the cabling worked becuse it worked on NT 4.0. (cables have been reseated)

I don't know if its a "SCSI/SCSI2/SCSI3 40/80/160" but it says SCSI (LVD/SE)

The last thing I can think of is to download and update the firmware on the tape device. This link has the firmware and the firmware upload program, and there is also a diagnostic utility near the bottom just above the documentation.

Another thing, were these already in the servers working before windows 2003?

The installation manual says to check the scsi id settings, termination is an LVD/SE terminator at teh end of the cable, make sure only LVD/SE scsi devices are on that same cable.  If those are all correct or haven't changed I would give M$ a call and see if they have a hotfix.  sorry =(
How do you check the scsi id settings?  There is a 5 on the back of the tape drive so I have tried to change that setting and reboot it and see if that helped but it didn't.  This is a external model DLT1 so there are no other devices on this cable.  I don't have Microsoft support so I can't call.   There is firmware to load but that can't be loaded unless I can get the drive to be recognized.

if nothing else it connected to the scsi cable it shouldnt matter which position it is in.  At the end of the cable do you have a terminator?  (usually looks like a dumby plug)

When the server boots up do you see the scsi card configuration manager? Usually there si a key combo like ctrl-h or ctrl-s to access the configuration manager on the scis card.  once in the scsi manager, look for devices connected to the card.  Does the card even see the tape device?
here is what the problem was.  I did some asking around to some other eng. and they have had this problem before.  You can't share a tape drive (EXTERNAL) SCSI controller with the RAID Hard drives.  It worked just fine on NT but not on 2003.  I went out and found a adptec  12960 controller and everything worked fine.

Thanks for posting back the information, glad your up and running!
