If you do not want to use POI, you can use the Csv file capabilities.
csv file is a file with separator (they could be TAB, comma, space limited).
Try to write a file like following and save it as .csv
first,second
one,two
a,b

it is opened like Excel with separator.

Here's a rad idea!  Excell will accept an HTML table as it's data.  I tried using the control characters and found it too confusing to insert tab, commas, spaces (sure maybe I'm a simpleton).  It's really easy to use a table, just set the content type and write the table as you would in another html page.  The way I did it was to just build a server side string and then output it on the results page.

Good Luck!

...Oh, I guess I should read the question, too, not just comments.  The short answer to your question is fortunatly, YES!  YAY!  You've just gotta set the content type like thomas suggests.

No feedback from user.
About 3 way to do are given, so I believe a split could be done.
