I was wondering if it is possible to have a select statement to retrieve one of the values in an insert statement.  So what I want would look something like this.

INSERT INTO table1 ( fielda, fieldb, fieldc)
VALUES ("txtvalue", intvalue, (SELECT max(field4) FROM maxtable))

Basically I want to auto increment a field when ever a new record is inserted.  Ideally it would be should be done in one sql statement.
