Can't Retrieve Email - Connection to Server Interrupted

I have a user with Windows XP Pro SP2 and Outlook 2003.  Also installed McAffee virus scan - updates online.

This user can not download any email from our server.  I have verified all the server settings are correct.  In Outlook and Outlook Express she gets an error: "'The connection to the server was interrupted".

I've gone through every step in Microsoft's KB article here, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;813514, to no avail.

I tried setting up a completely new account on the server for her but received the same error.

Other info and clues:

Disabling AV, Firewall, and/or Anti-spam does NOT help.

The user is in a small office with a workgroup network environment using a basic Linksys router on a T1 internet connection.

Our mail server is POP IMail 8.0.

I CAN retrieve/send mail from an Outlook Express on XP laptop on the same network.

Also, it appears to send/receive only ONCE after rebooting and first run of Outlook.

There are several others on the same network as this user who are NOT having any problems which rules out network/router/modem issues.

We can also access our mail account through a web mail interface.  She IS able to get her mail there without a problem.  This tells me it's not a server problem.

Leads me to believe it's a Windows issue.

I tried the following:
    Start -> Run : command
    telnet my.mailserver.com 110
And it seemed to connect OK

Any ideas?

This telnet session, could it be made to go further, like: USER: and PASS: followed by LIST or something? This would indicate that her account is valid and the credentials are OK. If it doesn't work from within one e-mail client I'd suggest you try another one, just for troubleshooting purposes (although I' personally go for anything BUT Outlook for e-mail). They don't take up much HD space and if you set them to leave mail on server, no impact whatsoever is noticed on messages on server. Pegasus is quite user-friendly (www.pmail.com).

ASKER

i know the account is valid, I can check it from other computers (Outlook) and online with web access.

I'm quite certain the problem is in the network/router or windows/outlook somewhere
