System Configuration: Six HP servers w/ window server 2003 and HP SSL1016 Tape Autoloader w/ DLT IV 40/80 tapes

We are currently using NTBackup to backup our server files, server system state files, and SharePoint site files. Later also use NTBackup to write the files onto DLT tapes.  Each of our data backup is around 70GB w/o hardware compression and I have to put the data on two tapes for each backup.  I am wondering if using Verita Backup will help us on the data compression or simplify the process in any ways?  I heard the Veritas 10d has SharePoint backup as an option, does anyone have experience with it? Wondering exactly how it works.  Any help appreciated.  Thanks.

Whatever backup software you use, the compression will be similar on each, so don't expect any or much improvement. veritas of course has backup agents for sharepoint and exchange, and also sql server, but normally you have to pay extra for these. It is possible they have a specific version for SBS server, and in that version those agents would be included. The main advantage of any agents are that you can backup those special data while the database or files are open, so you don't need to shutdown the service prior to backing up.

You will get a slight improvement on compression if you use software compression but it thrashes the CPU and RAM so the job takes longer and you can't feed the tape fast enough so the head wears out through repositioning (shoe-shining).
