Server Maintenance Planning
I have inhereted responsibility for a sizeable network. I would really appreciate feedback regarding server maintenance planning.
Specifically:
How much daily/weekly/monthly SysAdmin time will I need to maintain the average:
1) W2K3 Server Role = DC
2) W2K Server Role = DC
3) Exchange 2000/2003 Server
4) SQL Server 2000
5) A typical W2K3-based App. server with a 3rd party app.
6) A Linux Server
Also:
How about for PCs? How much time for PC maintenance? XP and 98. What would this entail? What level of skills should I hire?
Is the time for server maintenance and PC maintenance linear, or are there economies of scale?
Thank you very much!

i barely have much maintenance on servers at all, but when they go down it can take hours or days to get them back up, it all just depends really
there is no firm direct answer for this, i think your biggest roles will be maintaing AD and SQL
i would set up procedures for monitoring servers, checking logs, restarting regularly, etc
PC maintenance is nothing to hardy either, you need someone with enough skills to troubleshoot network issues of course and a good knowledge of OS's is good too, if you ar elooking at hiring, this may be a good oppurtunity to get a junior role in and train him, good oppurtunity for both of you as you will be surprised at how much you will learn training someone up. I would also look at moving to a native mode setup which will reguire getting rid of 98 machines, AD is much more friendly when you operate at Native mode
all the best
