Hi,

The bottom line of my VI editor has disappeared. It used to display line numbers etc. Otherwise, VI is functioning as normal; I can search (/) and run commands (:). Why could this be?

Hi,

I typed that command, but it has no effect.

Hi,
You can show file info and line numbers etc by pressing Ctrl+g, you can show when you go to input mode by typing ":set showmode".  You can also print a number at the start of the line by typeing ":set number".  Hope that's what your looking for.

Cheers,
  Stuart.

Hi,

Ctrl+g shows me the current line info at the bottom of the screen, which is just what I want, but it does not update when I move between lines - to do that I would have to click ctrl+g every time. Set showmode and laststatus has no effect at all.

I had the line numbers displaying correctly before! How could they have disappeared?

Oh btw, you might have accidently deleted your .exrc file or may be moved it in some other directory. If you can find it, put it back in your home directory and then you would go back to the settings that you had earlier automatically. You might also copy someone else's .exrc if you don't have yours.

Hi,

I created a .exrc file as you specified, and that worked! I don't think it's exactly as it was before, but it's ok. I now have two lines at the bottom, the normal one at the very bottom which displays the filename, the number of lines and characters. Above that I have a new one showing the same info, plus the current line number. At least it's there. Thank you!
