Track Following Error/Focus Or Tracking Error Optorite DVD RW DD1205

I don't burn many DVDs but when I need one, I need it right away. I burn more CD-Rs than anything else almost on a weekly basis.

I went to burn 2 copies of picture files I was presented by first a "focus or tracking error" and then a "track following error". I tried using different media and also lowering the write speed to no avail. I also switched to a different drive and also reinstalled Nero to no avail. The unit will burn a CD all day long without any problem. Also, I only use well known brands of media but not the super expensive gold ones.

I am wondering is the problem fixable or is this fairly new (maybe 1.5  years old) 8X DVD burner now toast? Wth DVD burners being so cheap, unless my problem isn't the burner, I'd be tempted to just replace the unit for a 16X one.

ok! I'm going to borrow over the weekend a DVD head cleaner. I'll try that and if it does not cure it I'll consider it toast. I'll let you know more on 2/20/06, as I'll be out of town on the weekend.

Do all DVD burners require the same amount of power to run them? Also is there any kind or type I need to stay away from?

The amount of power they require is small compared to motherboard, cpu and video card.  DVD dual layer burners are probably the best value right now.  Reviews of burners can be found here: http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/search/B/

I tried the DVD cleaner and basically it didn't work. I then (2/20/06) ordered a new DVD burner, which was a Lite-On SHM-165P6S. This is a 16X burner (old one was an 8X).

The drive installed with a minimum of trouble and was instantaly recognized by the computer. I instaled the version of Nero that came with the burner and had no problems buring a CD.

The solution is to replace the drive.
