Tape drive won't clean?

For some time now our Novell server with Backup Exec 8.5, Netware 4.11 has refused to correctly backup anything. In the Job History Log it says "Tape Drive name (SONY SDT-9000) needs to be cleaned. Please clean the device and retry the operation." I had read another post here that said all you had to do was insert a cleaning tape and it would perform a clean operation on its own simply by putting the cleaning tape in. However when I put the cleaning tape in the drive, it only stays in for 30 secs. or so and the backup operation still fails with the same error in the history log. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
