Synchronous/Asynchronous Printer Auto-create on Citrix - users starting apps too quickly

Metaframe 4.0, Win2003 server -- generally our setup works fine, but we're having printing problems (what else is new, it IS citrix).

Citrix docs say that if ICA maps to an application, it connects printers synchronously because the app might require the printer driver to be in place and ready to go before launch.

But if ICA maps to a general desktop login, the printers are set up asynchronously to speed the login process.

My users are logging into the desktop and immediately launching an application that requires the printers to be in place before running.  Because Citrix is creating the printers in the background for the first 15-30 seconds of a session, it produces an error (WINSPOOL not ready or something like that) and is causing other kinds of problems.  I need to either log them in with synchronous printer creation or have a way of detecting when the Citrix printer creation process is COMPLETELY finished.

Any pointers?

We were not previously publishing any apps or the desktop, but your post encouraged me to go figure that out.  We are still seeing printer spooling errors even when launching a desktop with the option un-checked.  If the app is launched too soon, the error pops up.

If we launch the published app, we are having better luck -- no spooling errors so far.

I'm awarding points because it forced me to learn about published apps and pointed out that the Desktop can be published as well.

It didn't actually work for the Desktop, but it does work when I publish the App.  Go figure.
