constant wireless diconnecting

I have a linksys wireless router and a linksys wireless pci card and I'm running XP pro.  The problem started a couple weeks ago.  It will drop the connection constantly then it will say "Acquiring network address"...after that I will have a connection for a limited time, then do the same thing over.  Widows firewall is off and I have tried turning my mcafee firewall off with no success.

it worked fine for about a month with no problems.

Hi there.  It sounds like either something is interfering with your wireless network, or one of your components is going bad.

Do you see any other wireless networks when you scan for available networks?

Have you added any cordless phones or any other wireless equipment?  I had a client once who had a wireless component added to her burglar alarm system, and yep, it was 2.4 GHz.  Totally blew away her wireless network.

If there is nothing that might have been added in your area that is interfering with the network, do you have access to a different router and/or card you can try?  it would help in ruling out bad hardware.

As a combination of what smconsult and pseudocyber said:
I'm guessing you did not change the linksys from its default SSID, and that you have a neighbor with a new linksys who also did not change the default SSID (anyway, one who has the same SSID).  So your machine gets confused, becuase sometimes it sees your network and sometimes it sees the other one.

My advice is THREE STEPS:
1) Change the SSID on your wireless router, (2) (as pseudocyber said) change the channel on the wireless router
and (3) go back into the wireless setup of your client machine to make sure it prefers the new SSID. (There is a screen in windows to do this, let me know if you need help finding it.)

Oh, and turn one of those firewalls back on!!

firewalls are on..i just turned them off for a coup,e minutes for testing.

ok i have no clue how to shange the ssid or the channel..
What is your linksys model number?

Typically devices like this have an IP address that you can use to set them up.
You would go to a computer that is hard-wired connected to the linksys, open a browser, and put in the address, that is found in the product documentation.  It might be 192.168.1.1, or 10.1.1.1, something like that.

A window will pop up asking you to log in.  Typically, fresh from the box, the login is something like "admin", with a password of "password".  If you cannot find it in the manuals, tell me the model number and I'll look it up.

Once you log in there are menu options or screens you can choose.
One of them will be for "wireless".  Once you enter that area, you can set the SSID and channel.

Try this:

1. Right Click on your My Computer Icon and select Properties.
2. Click the tab that says Hardware and click Device Manager
3. Click the + next to Network adapters.
4. Right click on your Linksys Wireless adapter and select Properties
5. Click the "Advanced" tab.

Here's where it gets a little tricky depending on the exact wireless card you are using.

If you see something that says "Power Management", you want that set to disable
If you see something that says "Signal Strength" or something similar, that will be a slide bar and you want it all the way up.
If you see something that just looks fishy, tell us what it is.

Have you recently installed any Microsoft updates?  Especially SP2?

Do you have any new neighbors who might be using overpowering wireless devices?  Like smconsult was talking about, I once had a user who's new next-door neighbor was a HAM radio operator, and they were aparantly not very good at what they did... they screwed up the 2.4Ghz frequency range.

Just a couple of ideas.
