Opening Illustrator files in Fireworks

I work with a graphic designer who uses Illustrator (I assume a recent version) on a mac.  I then take his work and convert it into web pages.  I use Fireworks MX version 6.0

Opening the files on a pc using illustrator 10 sometimes gives some strange results such especially with fonts.  But I prefer to work in Fireworks and get very disappointing results opening, or copy and pasteing etc.  I wonder if anyone has come across the best way to save files in Illustrator so that they open accurately in Fireworks and keep fonts/paths/images.

Main problems are:
fonts - often the text comes over as paths, even Arial!
images - some images do not come over at all

Look forward to your comments.

Thanks for the reply,

The Illustrator files contain page layouts almost in their entirety.  It is the graphic designer's view on how the site should look, but in many cases also contains both layout and content rather than just concept.  So there is page layout/background, images and text.

It is my role to convert these into web pages - effectively to reverse engineer and put back together on a web page.  Some sites are flash, some asp, php or html.  What in many cases looks like quite a simple job can sometimes take far longer when I have to re-draw vector paths or re-format text tables etc.  All seems very messy.  I've been doing it for a while, but there must be a better way!

Most common problems are:
Text - fonts are often not recognised.  The layout of the text is also lost.  Sometimes the text comes through as paths.
Images - sometimes these do not come through at all and I can't work out why!
Shadows and Brushes are often mis-interpreted (though with this I think I would be pushing my luck)
