Move mailbox not working, how to export/import pst's.

I'm unable to move mailboxes from our exchange 5.5 server to Exchange 2003 server (in same site), both servers appear in System manager on both servers but when I try to move from 5.5 to 2003 I get:
"The information store could not be opened. The logon to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer failed. MAPI 1.0 ID no: 80040111-0286-00000000."  Plus event id 1022 and 9562 errors.  I've found lots of technotes on this and did everything they said, I've spent hours trying to get this to work and have finally given up. If anyone has anything new that's not in technet I'd be glad to try it but I really need to get these mailboxes moved so I've decided to export to PST files then import. I'd just like to make sure my plan is correct, looks like I must:
1. export the pst file
2. delete the user
3. add them back in, creating their mailbox on the new server
4. import the pst file

Thanks.

Have you checked the permissions for the account that you are using?
Is this a single AD domain or do you have E55 in a NT domain and E2k3 in an AD domain with a trust in between?
Are your user accounts in AD or NT?
Before you install Exchange 2003, you install ADC and the ADC stamps attributes to the objects on the E55 server and then in the AD also, So both are linked via ADC attributes.

How many mailboxes do you have?

Yes, checked permissions for the account.
Single AD domain, E55 is on W2K server, E2K3 server is a member server.
Accounts in AD.
Yes installed adc, not sure what you mean by adc stamps attributes to objects but ran forestprep, domainprep, all the steps in the support tools.
about 30 mailboxes.
stop and disable the adc
export the mailboxes into pst files via exmerge
verify the pst file contents
then u can follow the plan that you have.

right now your e55 and e2k3 server are in the same org and connected via ADC. so any change u make in either of them will be replicated between them via ADC.
since you are not able to move mailboxes you want to export the mailboxes into pst files and then import them on the new server
i assume that you would be de-commisioning the e55 server after that.

is the public folders replication working fine?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822450/en-us
Yes, we will be decomissioning the 55 server.
Not sure about public folder replication, haven't checked. I'll just export these to pst as well.
I'd like to do a test of the E2k3 server before exporting, so thought I would manually export one pst, shutdown 5.5 server, delete the user, recreate, import pst and test sending/receiving internal and external. I don't know why the E2k3 server wouldn't work but would like to test anyway.
I'm hoping to start the process today, but have some other non-Exchange issues to address first so we may not start it until tomorrow.  I will let you know. THanks.
Well, I can export to pst but cannot import.  There must be some permissions thing I'm missing, just can not figure out what/where it is.  I tried just running a test, exported pst out of 55 server, deleted the user, added user and created the mailbox in new mailserver, then run exmerge to import. I get a message that the information store may not be mounted or I don't have permissions, below is the exmerge.log file. One thing I noticed is that if I go to SYstem Manager, under the new mailserver it does not show a mailbox for the user I added, this does not seem right...
This message is also the same one I get when trying to move mailboxes so possibly if I can figure this out I can move mailboxes.

After mulling this over I'm thinking the issue is that there is a/some exchange attributes missing. If so, who/where do I check them?

I have done KB323546, double and tripled checked but will check again. I have not created security group per KB292509 so I'll try that and check the others. What about the fact that I can create a new account in the E2K3 mailbox store but can not access that users' mailbox (via Outlook) and it does not show in ESM?
once you create a new account in AD and mail enable it, RUS stamps the user with mail attributes. once that is done then u can send it a test email. only after that the mailbox is populated and can be seen in the ESM
So I need to send it a test email before I can access the mailbox in Outlook?
yes.. before that check whether the mail attributes have been populated on that account in AD
I see Exchange General, Tasks, etc. However, I can not send an email to this user, I have to create the email address manually but then if I try to send email I get Invalid ADSP pathname was passed. I created a new message store and the message seems to have been sent but the mailbox still does not show in ESM. Also, still cannot import pst file.

Note that I got error 8213 and 9153 in event log when trying to send email to the original mailbox store.

I have done KB 292509, same error, am working my way through the rest.
I just realized part of this issue may have to do with an unsuccessful attemp to install Ex2000 about a year or so ago, I was not involved in this but I know they tried to install it on the W2K server, it was supposed to have been removed but when I go to add/remove programs on the dc is shows Exchange 2000, if I select change/remove my only options are to upgrade the 5.5 components.  The info I can find on these 8213 and 9153 errors seem to indicate an Ex2k issue.

I'm wondering whether I can just install a new Exchange 2003 server instead of trying to make it connect to 55?
wht u are suggested also works provided u have a single server single site setup

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327304/en-us

the above article explains the steps.

since u have already installed e2k3 into the e55 org u will have to clean it up before following the above mentioned article

u will have to go thru the following article to do the cleanup

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839356/en-us

but this might take time depending on the number of mailboxes u have on the e55 server
We do have single server/single site.  This looks a little tricky. We do have Ex2000, would it be better to try to upgrade the 55 server to that then try moving to 2003?

I'm trying to figure out what is the best thing to do at this point. We have about 25 mailboxes (one over 1gb, a couple .5 gb or more) and a few public folders. My thought is to use exmerge to export all the mailboxes, manually export the public folders.  Then completely remove Exchange 5.5 and 2K3 and any remnants of 2K and start completely over.
I've increased the points on this to 500 because it's gone well beyond the initial question.

It looks to me like I'll need to do this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839356/en-us
then  do a new install of 2K3.
