Multiple User access to a MS Access 2000 database

Two of our users having been jointly using a MS Access database since it was created back in 2002.  For some reason, today they can’t both use the database at the same time.  When one user tries to open the database when the other user has it open it gets a error message that states

“The database has been placed is a state by user “admin” on machine “LAURA-XP” that prevents it from being opened or locked”.

As far as I can tell nothing has been changed and all the network share and security settings are what they should be.  Any suggestions???

How do they open the db?  Through Access?  From a shortcut?
There's no way either of them have selected to open it in Exclusive mode?

ASKER

They open it from a shortcut that points to a shared folder, on one of the servers, that hold the database files.

Also when both users are out, delete the .ldb file that is in the same folder as the Database.
A suggestion would be that you could split your database to front and back end. I used to have the same kind of problem that your are having, but after spliting the db, it slove my sharing problem.

On the Laura machine open Access, navigate to the folder where the db resides, click once to select. Click the drop arrow next to Open, and select Open from the list. This should resolve the issue for the moment. The suggestion from Perennial will solve it properly though.
