Hi

if you want to understand the basics of subnetting, you may want to check RFC950 here :

http://www.rfc-archive.org/getrfc.php?rfc=950

As regards to network classes, you can check RFC1918 here :

http://rfc.net/rfc1918.html

Then, if you have more specific questions, I'll be glad to help.

Subnet

A portion of a network that shares a common address component. On TCP/IP networks, subnets are defined as all devices whose IP addresses have the same prefix. For example, all devices with IP addresses that start with 100.100.100. would be part of the same subnet. Dividing a network into subnets is useful for both security and performance reasons. IP networks are divided using a subnet mask.

While using IP Addresses for Big Networks, We have to devide big networks into some smaller ones with the help of Subnet.
Maximum No of PC in a Network are increased using subnetting.

    * Address—The unique number ID assigned to one host or interface in a network.

    * Subnet—A portion of a network sharing a particular subnet address.

    * Subnet mask—A 32-bit combination used to describe which portion of an address refers
       to the subnet and which part refers to the host.

    * Interface—A network connection.
