What is best temperature for HDD ?

Hello experts!

I have many HDDs - mainly 200 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 and wonder what is best temperature form them? They hold important information and I want to provide best condition so they works longer :)

Does someone know links from Seagate that describe temperature recommendations?

   Temperature, Operating (°C)    5 to 55
    Temperature, Nonoperating (°C)    -40 to 70

so, it would be good to keep your hard drive at around 20 - 30 degree centigrade

0 to 60 degrees celcius. The cooler the better.. but the best way to hold your data is to have an offsite backup on other media, whether CD/DVD, worm-disc, tape, another hardrive, etc...

The drive should never exceed the temperature ranges below. If the drives ever exceed these temperature ranges then the drive is considered "overheated" or is not getting adequate air flow from your current case environment.

 With our newer model drives the maximum temperature is now at 60 degrees Celsius.

The operating temperature range for most Seagate hard drives is 5 to 50 degrees Celsius. A normal PC case should provide adequate cooling.

However, if your enclosure is unable to maintain this range, we suggest that you contact your system manufacturer for information on cooling and ventilation hardware that is compatible with your specific configuration.

The answer to this question depends on your case environment. If you have adequate cooling, it is probably not necessary. If you feel that you need additional cooling, please consult the resources below.

Ok, manufacture has interest to publish large range of working. And some manufacture will want HDD to broke after a warranty period, and to bye new :)

I doubt that live of HDD will be same working on 35 C and 60 C ! Somewhere (I do NOT remember where) I read that hot HDD case 4 times more often defects!

My question is: what is best temperature for work to ensure longest possible live ?

work within the rated temperature ratings for the drive.. as I mentioned before cooler = better.

as for long life.. then don't write to the drive.....  Instead of maximize your longevity of the drive. consider a backup plan for catastrophic events.

Buck UP is good, but how to buckup about 1 000 - 2 000 GB ?! I use RAID, however RAID also wil fail in some HDD fail.

My qustions is what temperature to provide, so HDD is best ?
Currently I has 2 HDDs - one of them stay at 35- 38 and I think it is OK, but other get 40- 46. Both of them are in same modelel, however hotter has  lorse ventilation. Do I need to improve it ? Ok, I will put better coler, but does it is neccassery ?

I belive that SATA HDDs has temperature range that works BEST for thair live. And when stay in that range - it is OK. But what is it ?
It is like a car. Just because it reach 200 km/h it do NOT mean that if you drive with 200 km/h your car will has live as you drive with 80-90 km/h :)

All hardrives will fail.  The best temperature to run your system would be given in the manufacturers specifications of your hardrives.

Cooler is always better. Consider you will always have wear and tear if you subject heat & friction.
I like to keep mine around 25-35C - depending on the ambient temperature (winter/summer).
Having had a couple of IBM HDs  that gone haywire probably due to temperature I don't ever want to risk that again - of course, no temperature setting will keep your data safe - a good backup strategy is the most important issue.

I treat all HDs as if they could fail at any moment.
Think of it as: what if you got home right now, and your HD was trashed? Do you have backups of the "important" stuff?
Usually, we only care AFTER we go through that scenario ourselves (like I did once).

Yes, I have backup on critical data. I use 2-3 computers by LAN and after day- two I transfer all critical files. separately once a week I get all on DWD RW. But I can NOT back up all.
Backup is costly because I works with video files and they are GB . I know that ever provide best conditions HDD still can fail, however my target is to provide as closer as best condition with responsible price. Putting some coolers is cheep and I want to know if this is necessary.

I need of some hardware gay with hobby mechanics of HDD. He will know what best teperature is. My intuition suggest me that stay small over normal room temperature will be OK – may be 35-40. But what is “best” range ?

I study little mechanics. All materials get small on cool and widen on heat. Ever best materials! HDD has finely mechanics and I am sure that cool/heat affect it. Although hdd will works on 60 C due to widen it will has more room to recover after erros.
Disk performance and reliability significantly decrease as temperature increases and above 50 °C failure can occur any time. Disk manufacturers often limit the maximum operating temperature to 50 degree centigrade. However, it is recommended to keep your hard disks at lower temperature (approximately 35-40 °C is good) to increase their life time.

as you've said...35-40.
If you use raid, setting up a RAID 0+1 should provide you a high-performance, and highly secure (with no downtime), solution.  (or raid5 - if it your controller provides decent raid5 performance for video - but that may be overkill)
(what we really need is HD-DVD/Blueray  burners/media out there at decent prices. We need bigger "DVDs" for backups... :)

that 35-40 temperature range you mentioned is good enough.
(make sure you measure HD temperatures after/during some intensive disk usage - as some disks can heat up quite considerably from "idle" to "work" mode)
There's always dat tapes and a dd command for now o.O

Our servers have over 120 HDD's spinning in them, we can almost guarntee 1 dead drive a month...  This is located in our private data center with optimal cooling and conditions... just something to keep in mind.  

We also have had a RAID 5 go down with the impossible two drives as the same time, just something to keep in mind.

Rule of thumb is cooler the better, so i agree with above posts, 35-40.

Also vibration is a huge factor in drive realibility...  To much makes the head track, causing bad buckets, and all sorts of data issues.  

Also having a RAID 5 with a hot spare is very nice.

what you say - that your data center has 10 persent (12 hhd per year from 120 ) HDD crash per year ?
Does your datacenter replace HDD at periodic time (some years -how ?) or wait to crash and then replace them ?

RAID 5 is too slow when writting. And in some cases RAID do NOT help, - if you has power falire and some HDD use this power ?
10% is usaully what to expect.  Depends on the server really.  We do have a noticeable increase in drive failures when a server is in a hotter section of the data center.  Also all drives have a expected lifetime.

We have a grading system based on the smart information and read/write stats.  Although we only run this during intial install.  Then we just wait for failures.  With the hot spares setup, there is no down time when a drive goes bad.  

One of the biggest issues with RAID-5 is it doenst protect you against your worse enemy of all... THE USER :P  If some disgruntled admin executes a rm -rf / it doesnt really matter how bulletproof your RAID is. :)

So, for now we backup using either dat tapes, SAN's, netdisk's, snap's, or a cheap old usb drive in some cases.

Well, really user is biggest problem, but if we eliminate users who will use this system? So users we can NOT remove and must accept them (and teach them to minimize problems).
