Active Directory User CN appended with numeric digits...how to correct

There are a few cn's in my AD with 8 numbers appended to the end.  for example


#1 - how did this happen
#2 - how do I fix this
#3 - what, if anything, will this affect?


only 50 users in AD, single site, no names are repeated.

I already found the solution with ADSIEDIT
