USB Freezup connecting memory stick
My system freezes recently – locks up every time and must be reset when I plug in a Corsair 256mb memory stick – front USB ports only. No other USB devices connected. New behaviour, it used to work OK. Other devices almost always work OK plugged into front ports, but not always – maybe one in 20 times it will freeze. Back ports always work OK. System is: WinXP Pro (SP1) , Aopen m-board-AK77,Via600. All Via4-in1 drivers installed when new 18 months ago. Flawless performance until now using it 7 days wk x 10-12 hours a day for graphics. No other changes since new and the machine does not go to the internet – ever. Any help would be greatly appreciated - i did a search here but found nothing like this.
thanks a lot.
thanks a lot.
Your USB controller driver may be corrupt, in which case you can try removing it from device manager and letting it reinstall after rebooting. I would also test this stick in another system, on the chance that it is faulty and is causing the freezes.

Hi Callandor, thanks. This memory stick works just fine on at least 3 other computers. I will again try the device mgr remove/reinstall.
Flash the BIOS to the latest revision.

I have ordered the SP2 on a CD. I thought it was primarily for security but I'll try it on this machine. Even so, the mem. stick works on everything else Ive tried (SP1) and it use to work on this one too. No matter, I'll give it a try when I get it. I've been reluctant to install SP2 because of some software conflicts - but I guess thats cleared up by now too.
I had a similar problem once and found it to be the power supply. If you can try another PSU in your system, it's worth a look.

After contacting Corsair they decided that the mem stick is faulty and has RMA'd it. Thanks for the good suggestions here.

Regret that I did not close this correctly. In fact, I thought I did close it and accept but it seems not, I will do that now.
Hmm? It appears your selected solution doesn't say anything about a faulty memory stick, whereas I did say " I would also test this stick in another system, on the chance that it is faulty and is causing the freezes."
I'd agree here. As Cal' himself is the page-editor of this TA, you can ask him to reopen this Q so that you can accept the correct answer(s).
Of course you may try reinstalling the drivers for the USB flash memory stick
