Outlook 2003 hangs at opening add ins include, salesforce, acrobat, and McAfee
I have a stand alone PC acessing my pop server. Outlook continues to get worse and worse and really won't open. It will get to the mail screen and hang. It works fine in safe mode with networking, but I just don't know how to operate without some of my add ins which include, salesforce.com, acrobat, and mcafee. I fear it is a combination of any or all. Suggestions on how to permanently fix this, and still be able to utilize those programs?
Might want to try uninstalling, reboot and re-installing the add-ins after that to see if it helps resolve your situtation
Greetings, larry39 !
1. Reset the Outlook toolbar template. With Outlook close, do a search for and rename outcmd.dat file. Restart Outlook and a fresh outcmd.dat file will be recreated.
2. Register an important Outlook file. Go to Start > Run and type regsvr32 OLE32.DLL
3. Disable Outlook Addins. With Outlook close, do a search for and rename extend.dat file.
4. Create a new Outlook profile.

5. If no joy, reinstall Outlook. Go to Add/Remove Programs and highlight Microsoft Office. Click on Install/Uninstall. A menu will pop allowing you to choose repair or reinstall.

I have run detect and repair before, as soon as I put the ad in back, it slowly starts to degrade again.
make sure outlook is closed do a search in the file system for extend.dat and nuke it then open outlook. You may find more than one if there are more than one user accounts on the system...extend.dat is where all of the outlook plugin data is stored.
hope this helps!
P.S.If you want an exact path let me know what OS you are running.

Which specific addin is causing the problem? Not all 3. You should not use the one that you causing the problem. Find out if there is an update to problem addin.

I have tried all of the above short of unistalling and reinstalling everything. With the add in's off, it still doesn't run well. I am afraid I am down to uninstalling. By the way, I can't find the extend.dat file with a search. I am running XP Home.
larry39,
How did you turn off addins without renaming extend.dat? Extend.dat is a hidden file. Go to any folder and select Tools > Folders Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". Click OK.
A new Outlook profile did not remove the remove the error.

Sorry for the lack of follow up. The problem resided with McAfee Spam Blocker which was using all of the resoureces of the computer. I tried all of the solutions above, but only when uninstalled Spam Blocker did everything work properly.
Larry, I wish you had told us that you had McAfee spam blocker installed. Yes, the Spam blocker is a resource hog and causes many problem.
