System showing lesser disk space

Greetings experts,

D Drive on my win 2K machine shows
Capacity    27.9 GB
Used         20.0 GB
Free         7.91 GB

However, if I select all the stuff on the drive and check right click -> properties ... It shows only 14.7 GB disk space consumption. Hidden folders had been selected and recycle bin emptied so I am inclined to belive that 14.7 GB is all that is consumed.

Where is the remaining 5.3 GB disk space being used and how can I claim it back?

Note: other drives/partitions are showing correct stats. Problem is with this one partition only

Cheers!

It could be used for other purposes like temporary internet files, etc...

You can do a disk cleanup first.
Right click your c:\ in My Computer and then PRopoerties
Do a clean up.

Hi hongjun,

Temp files are on C drive ... anycase when I selected all files and folders on the drive, should that not have selected temp files (if any) too?

Cheers!

If even after unhiding the protected system files, you are not getting the right amount of used space, then run Scan Disk on your hard drive to fix the possible errors on the drive's clusters.
Hi Saahil,

>Did you uncheck Hide Protected System Files from Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View
That exlpained it .. there is a folder called Found.000 that is taking up 5.24 GB space and has 1000+ files named FILE0001, FILE0002, FILE0003 ... and so on. If I select any of these files, description says "recovered file fragments".

Are these files important? Can I safely delete them?

Cheers!

these are the files created by Chkdsk when it finds error on your hard drive, so if everything is working fine on your system data and os wise, you can safely delete these files.
Many thanks Saahil :)

Cheers!
