Newspapers are wireless

An interesting article from Fred Grimm of the _Miami Herald_ that humorously turns ideas
about new technology and the media on their head. He begins by pointing out the obvious,
that newspapers require no cords or telephone connections and are wireless: "We were
wireless long before wireless was cool."

He moves on to highlight the newspaper's "paper thin technology each page 40 times skinnier
than an i Pod Nano", its easy transportability; you can take it anywhere and you won't be
asked to switch it off, and its dependability; "Your newspaper may be the only communication
device in the high tech age that operates with candlelight."

Other advantages that the newspaper has over new technologies include: the fact that your
paper "comes without risk that a virus will invade your computer", and the absence of
"Annoying ads."

Grimm confesses that the reason for his musings is the pending sale of the Herald's owner
Knight Ridder (see previous postings here and here), "I bring all this up only because I
hear we're for sale. Something about a rebellion among institutional investors upset with
Knight Ridder's stock performance." Essentially, the problem, as Grimm states it, is that
newspapers, in the eyes of much of the business world, "are yesterday's beer."

He concludes by saying that the newspaper's best quality is that no batteries are necessary.

Who is Participating?
I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.
