chkdsk /r hangs

Upon boot up I recieved an error which stated something along the lines of Unable to read data from disk

I inserted XP pro cd, repair option was not available for volume.

I ran repair for recovery console instead on c:\windows I ran:
chkdsk /p
finished with errors detected, next I ran:
chkdsk /r
It has been running for about 6 hours now and is hung at 55% for about 5 of those hours?

Any advice would be helpful and appreciated.

your hard drive is dying!
take it out as soon as possible, slave it to another system and backup the important data as much as you can.

Here is a list of Hard Drive Diagnostic Tools
http://www.alaynah.net/shehar/drive_diagnostic.htm

And if you cannot read data even after slaving, then you can try some recovery tools to recover the data

I forgot to mention that it is an HP Pavilion zd8060 laptop.  How would I take the drive out and put it into another computer as a slave?  I 've heard of hardware device that allow you to take a laptop hard drive and plug it into an IDE channel on a desktop, but I don't know where to get them or what they are called?

The chkdsk was making progress upto 69% then it just returned to 50% again and is still there?  I absolutely cannot loose the data off this hard drive.

The chkdsk /r finally finished after 48 hrs and the hard drive ended up being bad after a diagnostic test within the bios. However I was able to recover the data from the hard drive by replacing origianl hives with recovery hives in the system32 directory.

I ended up purchasing a new drive for replacement.
