SMTP Auth from Outlook stopped working after upgrade to 8.12.11 - 'did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA' in mail log - redhat 9

A sendmail security release upgrade (sendmail-8.12.11-4.24.1.legacy.src.rpm) was installed two nights ago. Since that time our configuration that used to allow SMTP Auth from Outiook no  longer accepts logins for outgoing mail. (We have people who travel and need to use this feature). We are running Redhat 9.

When I attempt SMTP Auth login by using the 'test connection' button in Outlook with a known account, I see this line immediately in the /var/log/maillog file: [69.114.7.XXX] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.
